I don’t understand the huge disparity. Sure the Tesla’s are nicer and have

better range but it’s about a 5 to 1 or 10 to 1 difference.

Well, the Leaf was about 30k after incentives when new while the Model S was between $65-$100k depending on the trim and options. The Model S competes with the Mercedes S class and the Leaf competes with a Prius or Honda Fit.

On top of that, the early Leaf has a known battery degradation problem that the Tesla’s do not suffer from. A Leaf is a great buy for a teen’s first car or a city runabout, but older ones have half the range of the newest version and their performance and practicality are both lacking (great for a small, cheap car but in a different league from anything sold by Tesla).

The way it has been explained to me is that Leaf batteries have no thermal management while Tesla batteries are liquid cooled. So supposedly the Leaf has a more limited life span and that drives down value. I have no idea how true this is and it doesn’t quite explain the huge gap but that’s the story anyway.

Ones an ugly piece of shit, and ones a nice car.

Sat in a leaf once, honestly comfy seat.

If they come down cheap enough it may be worth having one be the work runabout.

750 dollars a year in work gas only adds so much

Heres a stupid fact but i did the math anyway. In order to replace my work van with a brand new leaf Id have to charge it 550 times a year to get my 55000 miles covered assuming ideal conditions and the ability to use all stored power every charge. On a 110v circuit that would mean 482 days on the charger (11568 hours) in other words it would have to be charged 24/7 for more days than there are in a year meaning i couldnt even ever actually drive it. On a 220v charger it would be roughly 114 days total charging time (2736 hours) and a 440v would only be 11 days (264 hours) of charging to get 55000 miles. The highest output almost makes it seem doable but in reality not so much with the way my job works it’s hours/distances. The electric future is not to far away for hard core service vehicles.

Kinja'd!!!

They are pretty cheap now. $6,500 is close to beater territory.

“Branding”

Seriously.. This is why. People know that Tesla is higher end, as long as you ignore the misaligned body panels/gullwing doors that crush your hand. Nissan’s aren’t known for that.

Tesla guaranteed their resale value for a while, plus they’re still a hot item. Neither of those things is true of the Leaf

And w/o buying gas and w/o needing to do oil changes, it brings it even closer to beater territory.

For someone like you, it would have to be a Tesla with Supercharger access... or nothing (at least when it comes to BEVs).

Only the Tesla has a Frunk... and available 7-passenger seating... and the Supercharger network... and good performance... and good range...

The vastly superior battery range and supercharger access means that for many people, the Tesla is viable as a daily driver while the Leaf would be useless.

Of course it’s all branding. The vastly better range, vastly better performance, vastly better charging network, the larger size, having a frunk as well as a truck and available SEVEN-passenger seating have NOTHING to do with it at all...

LOL

Seeing the math on the 440v kinda impressed me. If there was a van with 250-350 mile range and 440v charge option it could totally be doable except my company would have to provide electric and or install charging equip at my home (virtual employee) for The overnight recharge. On a long day hitting a fast charger on a lunch break would do fine to let you continue until you made it home again. The future is definitely getting close.

Every other type of car I see on ebay that has mileage that low and is priced that low is damaged. If you could find a cheap way to pump some value back into them you’d have a real business opportunity.

A dealer that doesn’t show the battery meter is intentionally hiding something. Very common practice with LEAFs. 2011s and 2012s suffered severe battery degradation. I know because the battery in my 2012 was replaced in May under warranty. This 2011 is likely out of warranty. If you can find one with a documented battery replacement, buy it.
