My 2002 Dakota’s:

700: idle

1100: where you dump the clutch on the second yellow

1500-2000: where you cruise

2500: where the party starts

3500: sweet spot, you can hear it, peak torque

5100: where the party stops

6000: redline, oil pump cavitates just beyond this. They mean it!

my 2000 Ram:

700: idle

700: where you let the clutch out to get moving

1700: where you upshift

2300: highway cruise

2800: LOL right

You just reminded me of my ford tempo that didn’t have a tach. It was such a slow car but could bounce on the rev limiter all day without breaking while the shift light flashed angrily. Ahh good times.

The cruiser is something like:

700 idle

700-4600 various levels of mooing

4600-5000 pain.

This is fun. My C30:

850 idle

850 ease the clutch out so you don’t just spin the tires

2200 turbo starts to spool

3500 break traction in 1st-4th

3600-5000 torque steer

5500 wails like a your mom does

Needs JDM 4-2-1 header and JDM intake manifold...or boost...or an engine swap.

That’s exactly as I remember it. Except my ‘02 SE had white gauges stock. Yours is an ‘02 as well, isn’t it?

Toyobaru:

700: idle

800-2000: only available in 2nd or higher. The throttle’s so sensitive at idle it’s impossible to blip it to less than 2k to take off, and if you drop below 2k in first once moving it bunny hops.

2000-3000: cruise

3000-5500: only useful for revving through while dropping 3 gears.

5500-7400: party (in a blender full of bolts)

Yeah, this isn’t my picture. I have white gauges.

I was wondering. Those black gauges look like an NB1 set, which would have had the BP-4W. That has more “boredom” in the middle without the VVT to kick up the mid-range torque.

I think the BP-Z3 does pretty well for a small NA motor. My autocross friend has a MSM with a boost controller. We found that off the line, his car struggles to keep up with mine, despite the more aggressive final drive. Once his turbo spools up into the boost, it is no contest. But until then that mid-range torque bump of the VVT engine is pretty sweet.

Yeah the VVT engine with a 6 speed is an okay combination (though I’d prefer the 5 speed myself). I just thought it was amusing how utterly useless it feels over 6k for a “high revving” low displacement DOHC four.

That’s what forced induction is for. The B-series Mazda engines just beg for turbocharging if you ask me.

I turbo’d my 1.6. I’d like to do a basic bitch intercooled 7psi build on my car. As long as you don’t max out the injectors the MAF can scale for any amount of intake flow, and the injectors are good to about 190 crank hp so 6-8psi (roughly a stock MSM). If possible I’d get stock MSM turbo goodies and upgrade the intercooler and call it a day.

As long as you don’t max out the injectors the MAF can scale for any amount of intake flow, and the injectors are good to about 190 crank hp so 6-8psi (roughly a stock MSM).

That’s essentially what the Flyin’ Miata Voodoo II turbo kit provides. Their piggyback controller lengthens the injector pulses under boost, and just about everything else is still controlled with the factory ECU. As you said, 6-8 psi is the practical limit before you need to go to bigger injectors (and more complicated fuel management that knows how to drive those).

I feel like the 200 hp level would be a whole lot of fun. Though I also feel like after a while I’d crave more and want to step up to the 250-ish level the stock internals are good for.

I did the “Turbo with an FMU and 1.8 injectors” on a 1.6 at 8 psi and it was an absolute riot. No intercooler, no EMS, no blowoff valve. Retard the timing a bit, dump 91 octane in there, add a rising rate FMU and #sendit with a mitsubishi turbo welded to a hacked together stainless steel exhaust manifold and downpipe. I badly want another boosted Miata. I had the chance to pick up a free MSM factory turbo setup but wasn’t able to make the drive to Texas and missed out.

Also used in Mazdas as well like the Mazda6! So swapping a Duratec V6 would still keep it (somewhat) in the Mazda family!

2013 Honda Fit:

700: idle

700-1800: burning the clutch

1800-2300: lugging

2300-2800: back road cruising

2800-3400: highway speeds

3400-4000: now we’re getting somewhere

4000-5000: I might now upshift

5000-6800: WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
