It's video card time. But should I wait?

Kinja'd!!!

I want a faster video card for my gaming PC/Hackintosh and I have budgeted about $200 for this component. The Windows side can run anything, but on the Mac side I need something a little older since I’m running El Capitan (EC doesn’t work with any of the 10x0-series cards - only 10.12 and above do) and don’t have any plans to upgrade that OS in the immediate future. I’m currently running a GTX 670 which is good, but not stellar. I mostly run simulators, so frame rate is critical.

It seems like the ideal card for me would be a GTX 980 or 980 Ti. I’ve seen a few 980s on Craigslist for right around my budget, but I’m wondering if I should hold out a little longer until the Ti version hits my price point. The performance improvement seems to be noticeable from the benchmarks I’ve seen, but I’m wondering if I will always have some lingering doubt about the missing performance if I don’t wait and get the regular 980.

Also, are there any other places I should be looking for an older video card other than eBay and CL? Anybody know anyone that has recently upgraded and have an old card sitting around?

I bought a crazy Asus ROG rig and it has a GTX 980 and not six months later they rolled out that fancy 1080 and I was pissed!

Buying video cards is tough right now, Crypto-Currency has been hot for about a year driving prices way up on cards. New sell at MSRP all day and used sell at near it.

Now that you can get RX 570s in stock again for about $230 that’s a good buy, next best would be a GTX 1060 3GB for about the same.

Can’t go with any 10 x 0 series because of El Capitan. Want to stick with Nvidia since I already have the web driver installed and am not proficient yet with tweaking the Hackintosh and don’t want to risk blowing it up.

The cryptocurrency thing has me a little concerned, but most of the ads I’ve seen say they’re not being used for that purpose, only for gaming. I’ve only had one video card fail on me in the last few years, a trusty 9800GT, but I know they all have finite lifespans.

Why aren’t you upgrading to High Sierra? AFAIK it’s fine so long as you don’t have a blank root password

I haven’t seen any features that make me interested in upgrading to Sierra or High Sierra. From past experience, OS versions get bloated until a rewrite is done. 10.6 was great, and things just kept getting slower until El Capitan, a thorough redo, and that breathed new life into even older machines. And Apple kept changing things in the way things worked, like the whole ‘Save/Save As’ issue, with them eventually reverting back to something that wasn’t confusing (and more importantly, wasn’t broken).

El Capitan is speedy as can be on this i7 3770 machine, and at this point I have yet to see any change or feature with the new OS releases that would be worth the inevitable dip in performance. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what I’m missing.

I’m not one to rush out and get the latest and greatest just because something new is out there. I’m still content with my 6S Plus (which is still running iOS 10) which I purchased last year because my 4S was feeling a little slow and needed a battery replacement (word to the wise - avoid cheap Chinese replacement batteries on eBay). Sometimes there are valid reasons for upgrading, like 10.7-10.10 going to 10.11, but obviously I’m not one to get the latest and greatest, even if it’s free, just because it’s available.

It’s really hard to beat those 1060s. Their price:performance ratio is basically unbeatable right now.

GTX970 should be fine.

I recently got a GTX1060 6GB for $235 shipped (used, off Reddit) but that won’t work unless you upgrade your OS

I’d say if the 980 will get you the performance you need, that’s good enough. If it doesn’t, hold out for the TI.

Another place to check is the for sale/for trade section of hardforum.com, that’s where I buy most of my used computer parts.

They did patch the root password thing already! That’s one of the craziest bugs I’ve heard of in a long time...

The Bitcoin miners this year have driven up the prices on all things video card and DDR4 memory. If you can wait until production catches up, then you will see better pricing this coming year.

I found my machine got faster from Sierra to High Sierra with the introduction of APFS, though I didn’t run any benchmarks on El Capitan so I can’t say if it’s faster than that.

It’s fair not to rush out and get the latest such because it’s new.. but when it ads support for newer and faster GPU’s then it’s no longer simply an impulsive choice.

yeah ‘patch’ it by removing the security update that caused it, and from testing around the office if the bug had worked and enabled the root w/ no password it was still enabled.
Thankfully the vast majority of devices in my office have the corporate root password set.

I find reddit.com/r/hardwareswap to be priced well. Just stick to people with confirmed trades.
