Yes, that’s as closed the glovebox gets. No, there isn’t a damn thing in it. This is the worst gap, but pretty much everything on this car fits together poorly.

Is this a rental spec “Limited” or a real, for consumer vehicle?

A little bit. I’ve heard GM has improved recently. On one hand simple physics and economics means that to get a car so large down to this price point it is going to have some rough edges. But others at a similar size and price point that I’ve been in are more solid (e.g. Avalon). I guess GM is still just being GM.

It’s a rental but LT trim of which there are many on dealer lots for consumers to buy.

I do like how GM has drug smuggling compartments.

Counterpoint: God knows what’s happened to/in that car. Although that still doesn’t bode well for GM.

I was hoping that their bankruptcy would have snapped them to attention, but they seem to be back to their old ways. It all seems to have that ‘eh, good enough’ feel to it. When I hear doors creaking on fairly recent GM vehicles at work I question why they just can’t copy something simple like hinges and strikers from the Japanese or German competition.

I really want to support the domestic industry, but with the stuff they’re putting out I just can’t. FCA doesn’t have anything I’d buy, and even Ford has issues. For reasons I can’t really explain I still want a first generation Volt, however, but that’s more about the technical aspects more than anything else. I know the second generation is much better, but for some odd reason I love the first.

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been driving GM cars and never had problems like this. Are there little things that escape manufacturing QC? Sure. But everything I’ve driven has been great. Most I bought well used. Maybe nobody ever reported to the loaner that they tried to close the glove box on a steel pipe? rentals get the crap beat out of them. GM has been building great cars since the mid/late 90's. The ‘80s were rough. If you bought the cheapest models you definitely could find some shortcuts, but the same goes for any manufacturer. I’ve been in cheap old Hondas and Toyotas that are complete and utter shit - it depends a lot on who owns it and how they take care of it.

To be fair, I had a rental Camaro earlier this year and it was fantastic. Built with quality hat could hang with anything.

But I’ve been in tons of mid-2000’s GM cars that were falling apart inside with under 100k. No, it’s not just GM that has those problems, but it definitely has been a sore point in my experience.

The Camaro I had earlier this year had world-class fit and finish (though the materials weren’t great but expected given the price point). It just seems like it’s not across the board yet.

I’m feeling salty because I’ve been wrapping gifts and drinking wine for the last three hours so I refuse to accept that counterpoint I don’t care if it’s a rental or not. These days a $30k should be able to make it to 30k miles without these kind of issues. You can see it all over the interior of this thing. Nothing lines up and the panel gaps are huge. Various bits of trim just wobble when you lean on them. I’d excuse it in a Spark or Sonic or something but I feel like once you get up to Impala they should be doing better. The Camaro I rented earlier this year was much better put together. The Malibu I had was similar to this Impala. But the Malibu also had fabric covering dash that matched the seats that was so WTF I couldn’t even wrap my head around the rest of the interior.

Yeah, from what I hear GM actually tries on their RWD cars, but from my experience I’ll never own a FWD GM car.

For what it’s worth, GM’s FWD cars seem to be hard to kill if you can deal with bits and pieces outside of the drivetrain falling off. It’s easy to laugh at but I’ll take it over the serious mechanical issues I’ve had with two Toyotas that spent so much time in the stop and got me to the point I’ll never buy another one.

From experience I completely agree. Most of my family has had fwd GM stuff forever, myself included until 6-7 years ago. Only ones that every gave any of us issues bigger than intake gaskets (3.1) were my N* caddy that broke it’s flywheel, leaked from everything, and had plenty of other issues on top of those; then my grand Prix gtp which was probably on its 4th trans when I sold it. Bought it with a GM reman unit already in it but starting to act up, replaced that with a used one which lasted maybe 6 months, then rebuilt the old reman unit myself. Otherwise, they’ve all been pretty good as far as reliability goes.

There are too many factors that make it hard to hold GM responsible for things after 5 years. The impala glove box probably didn’t come from the factory that way, and with normal use and care it probably would be fine. But one renter slams it shut with too much in it and it breaks? Do you really hold that against the manufacturer?
