Someone is claiming the mid 2000's Buick Allure has a desirable engine. That’s bullshit right? 3.8L I think.

I need an Allure Super.

you could get it with an LS4 v8 in Super trim.

And the 3800, though not particularly “desirable” is highly reliable....

Yes, the 3.8 was an option. But it wasn’t an interesting one with a supercharger.

The 5.3 LaCrosse Super is the interesting one.

surely you aren’t questioning the legacy of the 3800, right?

It came with three different engines: the 3800, the 3.6 DOHC, and the 5.3L LS4

The Buick 231 V6, known in later iterations as the 3800 , was on Ward’s Top Ten list for many years. It wasn’t spectacularly powerful, with the final iteration putting out 200 hp / 230 tq in the L32 naturally aspirated model, with the L36 supercharged pushing 260/280, but the power was wide and usable throughout the RPM range on both models. The engine was cast iron block with cast iron heads, one of the last vestiges of this particularly ancient configuration.

The simple overhead valve configuration, sequential fuel injection, and wasted spark coil pack system meant that the engine was incredibly reliable. Over the years only a few parts were singled out as points of failure, such as the Series II ’s lower intake manifold gasket. Given its simplicity, ease of maintenance, reliability and fuel economy, GM’s 3800 series is an undoubtedly quality engine, worth taking one, two, maybe even three looks at.

Disclaimer: I have owned one 3800 Series II, in a 2001 Impala LS. It was an engine.

I’d like to add; I will happily wax poetically about anything, as long as the price is right. The amount I’ve drank tonight could also mean I think that response above is leagues better than it actually is. Your opinion may vary.

Personally, I consider the 3.8 V6 to be a plenty desirable engine. Its the only one I would want in that car.

FWD V8? Pass, the torque steer is likely bad enough with the 6. Besides, that 3800 is a bulletproof workhorse, one of the best engines GM ever made.

IIRC isn’t it just an LT with two cylinders loped off?

It’s an evolved form of a Buick V6, which was based on a Buick V8. It isn’t related to the LT Chevy V8.

Actually through supercharged version is the L32, the naturally aspirated is the L36.

I had two Bonnevilles and a former moderator of the Bonneville club.

I’ll take the 3800 over the LS4. Very solid motor with enough torque to get around comfortably and efficiently. The 3800 is a no nonsense motor with a lot of mod potential.

The 3800 series I and II are a complete redesign from the 231 V6. No parts are interchangeable. Both are V6s and designed by Buick, that’s about all that relates them.

The 3800 is a tough reliable motor. The early versions had a flaw in their plastic intake manifold and intake manifold gaskets that was easily remedied with the revised aluminum version of those gaskets. I have owned several 3800s and still have a bunch with family members, one over 300K miles, everything original except the intake gaskets.

I had a ‘98 Buick Riviera supercharged and modded to heck that could fly. Cam, pulley, headers etc and it was a damn quick car, but still comfortable and roomy as my DD.

Nope. The 3800 is a descendant of the venerable Dauntless V6, which was a descendant of the Fireball V6, which was, in turn, derived from the Buick 3.5 V8.

A redesign yes but still a 90 degree V6, cast/cast design, 231 cid based off the 231. It’s a generational thing; still related.

I know it’s a tough reliable motor. I stated that in my response.

I’m glad you have owned a few. I’ve owned one. I’d like to own more someday. Thanks for reading and responding!
