Kinja'd!!!

Will be a Christmas miracle if Sadie starts. She’s being hesitant. Piece of wood molding being used for a hood prop because the hood springs snapped off.

I heat the plugs up twice when it’s cold in my W123

I came home to find the wreaths and lights on the car. Guess my mom was feeling extra festive.

Had a W124 300D, but damn do I love me a 123. Is there a garage you can park it in for a while?

Unfortunately not. Trying to get it started now so that I can get it off the street and into my neighbor’s driveway.

Good luck! I had one briefly. Kinda miss it, but it was a money pit. I remember the fuel filter was so clogged it wouldn’t start. Had to have it towed to the shop to have the filter (in-tank) replaced. It actually needed the tank drained, cleaned, and the fuel lines replaced. They were really clogged up. But I ended up selling it before my wife divorced me, lol.

If the fuel level is low, dirt may be accumulating around the filter. You could go get a few gallons of fresh diesel and add a bottle diesel fuel cleaner. It might help get her started.

I have an Optima battery with 800 amps, I don’t know if you have done a full tune up so I can’t say what it might be.

A small shot of ether will solve that problem.

I was starting to think I may need to replace the pre-fuel filter. The small clear one that cost like $3. It is kinda low on fuel so I was hoping to put some more fuel in once I got it started.

She sits for long periods of time without being started. I’m not surprised that I’m having trouble, but it sucks. But once you get her started she runs PERFECTLY.

Speaking of vehicles being difficult on this Christmas Eve, my truck actually stalled on me earlier. Was taking my mom over to my grandfather’s so she could help him cook if he needed, and it died at the end of our street and would not start at first. Eventually I tried holding my foot on the gas pedal and it started back up. I’m chalking it up to dirt in the fuel filter or something.

I don’t really need the car to start right now, but it sure would be nice if it did.

It just threw me off guard. I’ve had it for two years now, and this is the first time the engine’s ever given me any trouble. Really, the only other time it broke down on me was due to a rusty brakeline, which wasn’t really the truck’s fault.

Yeah I would start it once a week and get it up to temperature. They aren’t like gas cars, mine doesn’t like the cold until it gets nice and warm, 80 degrees. I also run seafoam through her periodically which wouldn’t be bad to put in the diesel if you don’t use it much. I also use an Opti Lube diesel additive, I don’t put much diesel in it unless I know I’m using it so it doesn’t go stale. I also disconnect the battery, I have a slight power drain off the 2nd fuse and I have no idea what on that fuse it is, I know it isn’t the dome lights.

NO! NEVER ETHER IN A DIESEL!!!

Sorry to shout, but, no: never. WD40 is starting fluid for diesels: it will not explode prematurely.

We used ether for years at the shop on both trucks with failed glow plugs and all manner of earth moving equipment that was cranky in the winter, as did the diesel shop next door. The key is just using a very small amount. If you’ve used more than about a half-second spray into the air cleaner on anything smaller than about a 10 liter engine, you’ve used too much.

My 123 has fairly decent compression but I still like to plug it in if under 40°. Full synthetic oil helps a lot, but with a CR of 21:1, spinning these over takes a lot of grunt.

2 suggestions: run a 1/0 cable from where the battery grounds on the inner fender over to the motor. I did that on my first 300SD after replacing battery and starter and glow plugs, and the difference was markéd. 2) check/ replace glowplugs. Problem is, if you just ohm them in the car you don’t get the full picture. They can ohm out alrite, but not glow almost-white when you try them out of the car with jumper cable. (#5 is kinda a pain so I just replace with a known-good if I pull it for any reason). Also, are they all getting decent current? Been awhile, but there’s a How-to over on Shopforum. Def glow twice-first one till the lights come up again; for the second I say my mantra three times: ‘Rudolf Diesel was a facking genius: Rockefeller screwed us over’

Ok, more than 2... How long since last valve adjustment? My TD doesn’t seem to care, but my old D would get cranky about cold starts if I let it go to 7 or 8000 miles.

You using anything to help lubricity? Power Service is actually pretty >bad< for that in our engines. 1/2 to 1&1/2 oz of ashless full-synthetic 2-cycle oil TCW3 per gallon diesel makes a huge difference: quieter & smoother & easier starting. The 617 was basically designed in the ‘60s: it does NOT like current low-sulfur fuel.

Sorry: I’ll shut up now. Merry Xmas/Happy Hollidays to you & yours!

Did you try priming it? That would often work on my first SD. Also, for whatever reason, just a tiny bit of pressure on the accelerator helped a lot. My best guess on that was that the extra fuel helped worn rings get just a >bit< more compression.

True. I know plenty of people who have. As you say, if you know to just barely hit it, it’s fine. Having blown the air cleaner off a gas engine after I was old enough to know better, tho, I always preach no ether on diesels. Too easy to make a mistake.

Thanks much! No idea how I’ve missed this. $9? SOLD! My wagon is dark blue, so I’m thinking either white or silver. Leaning white.

Hmmm.... I have all the trim pieces from the parts car. Wonder what it would take to make one for the rear symbol...

It goes pretty well with some lights, also. :)

I think that makes 4 w123 owners on Oppo now!
