Kinja'd!!!

Traditional kiwi Christmas morning scene. You’ll have to add in the smell of coffee, and bacon & eggs on the barbecue.

Despite this, it’ll be turkey and all the trimmings for dinner: tradition is tradition :-).

Neat, I’m flying there in a little over a week. Any good car events (or other events) on the north island in January?

Have you always lived there? It sounds like a pretty neat place - one which I wouldn’t mind visiting some time.

Yes, apart from a few years in England after I graduated. It’s a fantastic place to live - good climate, not too many people, decent economy, relatively low inequality.

Only downsides are wages are low relative to cost of living (by US/Euro standards) and it’s a heck of a long way from anywhere if you want to travel. Though that’s also a good thing, when Kim & Trump start waving their dicks around

Neat. It’s definitely up there on my list of places to see. As a software developer, I totally agree with the ban on software patents there, but I wonder if things like the trans-pacific partnership will put an end to it.

No, we get to keep that exclusion under TPP. The bigger implication is for copyright law. There’s a good paper on how TPP affects NZ tech industry here: https://internetnz.nz/sites/default/files/submissions/tpp-ip-it.pdf

What flavor of dev are you?

Back end. Currently doing Python/Django development for the agriculture industry, but I started with .Net in the oil and gas industry.

That makes me happy to hear that you guys get to keep that as an exclusion. Given all the garbage that software patents have caused, and that district in east Texas that is a total gong-show, it makes me want to go to New Zealand. Even the company I work for is a bit patent happy, which saddens me.
