I must admit I am in love with big brakes; if a brake rotor doesn’t fill up every millimeter available I feel like a wheel is missing something...

Kinja'd!!!

I know that for REASONS some brake systems don’t necesarily need all that space, for instance, the Porsche 718 and its weird rear wheels with such small rotors that are so small you can see the track across the wheel!

Kinja'd!!!

A big rim with a small rotor makes me think of a beautiful dress designed for someone with Scarlet Johansson’s body type being worn by someone with Kiera Knightly’s... there’s so much empty space!

Or perhaps an insecure teenager buying shoes 3 sizes larger because he believes the stereotype about size...

in short, it feels like there’s so much space to work... space for activities like converting kinetic energy into heat using friction between two surfaces...

Space to have just huge ass brakes!

But brakes are unsprung mass and should be small as possible while still functioning adequately!

Kinja'd!!!

I would have liked bigger brakes than what I went with for looks and even more stopping power, but I decided that the reduction in rotational mass was a better choice. Fifteen inch wheels and either ten or eleven inch rotors (I can never recall)

(edit) reduction in unsprung mass, not rotational

“I know that for REASONS some brake systems don’t necesarily need all that space”

I know... its a shame its physically irrational because I love a big rotor and a fat caliper, I remember that before driving the 458 back in Summer I just fell in love with the huge six piston calipers and the odd texture of the carbon ceramic brakes... Its one of my favorite aspects of the car!

What about inboard brakes? I know those leave the tires even more naked but it would reduce unsprung mass... give it a shaft strong enough and sufficient cooling and it might make sense... it also shifts the weight of the car towards the center meaning its easier to rotate.

Those look appropriate (read: great) for a miata... Is that exhaust stock?

As long as its not a bro exhaust... is all good...

But about exhausts...I think that lately more cars have dual exhausts on opposite sides of the bumpers just for aesthetics and sometimes its not necessary... like... my jeep; its got them on opposing sides... but I honestly think it could’ve sufficed with two stuck closer together with less piping... perhaps it would’ve been more efficient... I dunno...

Just look at the Kia Stinger 2.o or the Audi S3.. do they really need four tips? its got as many tips as it’s got cylinders...

I don’t think inboard brakes reduce unsprung mass, because the diff and half shafts aren’t supported by the suspension, I think......

Also you drove a 458 and didn’t tell us!

The calipers would be sprung by the suspension, but the added weight of the stronger shaft might undo the benefits!

We’d have to make really long calculations to figure out how much the rotors would be reduced.(because it depends how much of the mass of the shafts are supported by the tire directly and not the suspension, same story goes for A arms and such)

I agree with you. the only reason to fit larger wheels is to house bigger brakes.

I give the rear wheels a pass, though.

Every brake can be big if the hub is big, the disc is narrow and the pots are many...

They are CTS-V 6 piston Brembos in the front and ZL1 4 piston Brembos in the rear.
