Hello Oppo!! It’s been awhile, lots has happened, etcetera, etcetera... Long story short, I sold my truck and am now realizing that I’ve made a mistake. Now I need something I don’t give a damn about for the winter. Searching Craigslist, I’ve come across many a used-up FWD 4-banger, GM land yacht, and various rust-buckets.

Then I found this... a 1971 Jeep J4000 with a 360 AMC V8 and 4-speed. Scale of 1-10, how good or bad of an idea is this?

depends....do you want your winter banger you dont give a damn about to just keep on trucking without a little love and work from you.... or are you okay with random bouts of wrenching?

if its the former..... get something newer.... or a corolla on winters... if its the latter have at it

(tho... to be fair... them old trucks are pretty damn bulletproof if treated right.... and a nightmare if they havent been)

so im gonna scale it as a 5

That’s the conundrum I’m having - if I had a bigger budget and more free time, I would’ve jumped on it without hesitation. My old truck was a rusty 86 C20 with 160,000 miles, and it was an unstoppable tank - but that was that truck, this one isn’t. I could go either way on it

Buy the right vehicle for the job. Corolla on winters, as farscythe mentioned below is my vote!

Nice price... but not as a winter beater. I think that truck deserves to be restored.

For a winter beater, you want something where there are still tons of them out there.

It’s a definite nice price. I would test drive it and see what kind of mechanical vibe you get from it.

As I said to Farscythe: if I had the budget and time, there’s no question I’d by it and fix it up. But that’s also true of many cars I come across...

Not many (cheap) Corollas around here for some odd reason - mostly Civics, Accords, and Sentras. Not that it makes that big a difference for my purposes, though.

I think I will, but Manwich made a good point - I should be looking for something there are millions of out there. Parts would be cheaper and more readily available.

Still, I wonder if the fit my wife would throw is bearable enough to buy this AND a winter-duty car...

I’ve driven all the trucks from the era-and a Jeep pick up like this was the best plow truck by far. I never even needed the quadratrac.
