Nobody had back story in 1977 and we didn’t give a shit. Why should that matter now?
We saw it today and I was thoroughly entertained. The only thing where I actually put my hands up and said, “Are you friggin kidding me?” was when Leia flew back inside the cruiser. If she had just been dead from that point on it would have been fine.
Ironically, out of the original human cast from 1977, the only character who is still alive is the only one whose actor is dead.

But that was the original trilogy. These are sequels which fully acknowledge the events of the original trilogy. You can’t just replace with the Emperor with some random asshole after he dies and not explain how he got there. Once he’s out of the picture you have to explain how his 2.0 version got back in! Otherwise it just makes the Emperor’s death in the original trilogy pointless.

Yeah the Leia thing was stupid, not because she used the force, we’ve know she is Force sensitive for a long time. But she survived like 3 minutes in space. I agree she should have just died. Although being killed by some TIE random pilots would have been a bit unceremonious for General Organa.
I actually agree that it’s okay that Skone doesn’t have a backstory, and LOVE that Rey’s parents aren’t important. Kylo is the Skywalker in this story. Overall the movie wasn’t great, or horrible, just okay. And it still left me looking forward to episode 9. which was the whole point.

Yeah, all that build up only to have him be a generic badie who overestimate his own abilities. Although there are theories that Snoke wanted Kylo to kill him in order to complete his training, which makes a lot of sense.

Not necessarily. The whole point of that scene was that Ren was too much of a chickenshit to do it himself. And, as for Rey’s parents, how do we know that Ren wasn’t lying to her? I’m still convinced that there’s going to be some storyline where they are actually related, like Luke and Leia. “Ren” and “Rey” are just too much alike to be a coincidence.

I see what you mean, but we don’t even have much of an explanation about the First Order, other than that they arose to fill the vacuum left by the Empire. At the end of the day, there are more important things that are fleshed out. I think it’s enough that Snoke and the FO are there, and that they are the bad guys. I’m not all that worried about where they came from, unless Snoke is somebody’s father.

That’s probably what disappointed me the most about “The Force Awakens” I was expecting the new trilogy to start pretty soon after blowing up the death star and how things played out from there. But oh well.

Because in 1977 we didn’t have six movies of backstory in which this (apparently quite old) master of the dark side of the force appears not once. Most of the other old characters we know. Maz and Snoke both just kind of appear out of the woodwork, although a least Maz seems to have some explanation.
FWIW, I am mostly annoyed because it’s just JJ Abrams being his annoying “question box” self, creating tons of mysteries without bothering to answer them for himself, and thus being unable to answer them for anyone else. 10:1 Abrams has no clue who Rey’s parents are, or who Snoke is, or what the Knights of Ren are, unless someone literally forced him to come up with answers, in which case they are almost guaranteed to be complete shit.
