Depending on his insurer, if it’s his first accident in many years and he has no recent tickets, his rates may not go up at all.

Oof, that’s a lot of cash. I wonder how differently he’d drive, if there was no such thing as insurance, and he knew that he’d be faced with having to pay all that himself if he crashed. It’d be one hell of a wake-up call!

I may be missing something, but how did that not total it??? Is the infinity worth more than I thought?

Are rates in the USA on a severity basis? We in BC go by frequency only.

If you have 2 million dollar liability claims or 2 $1000 dollar claims, your rate would change exactly the same.

A small collective bargaining fee.

I’ve often wondered how much shops jack up their expenses for these repairs, knowing that, since they are an “approved” shop for their insurance company, anything they submit will be paid. There is probably a certain margin of padding in there they they figure they can get away with and not lose their special status.

Labor rates and parts cost are lower for approved shops. They negotiate a lower rate with the insurance company in return for guaranteed volume business. Biting the hand that feeds you isn’t a great way to stay on as an approved shop.

That’s what I was saying. At the same time, I’ve seen two estimates from an “approved” shop and from a second shop for the same job. The approved shop estimate is higher and climbs higher still after they dig into the job. I’m not saying the shop is necessarily dishonest, but perhaps in an unapproved situation, a shop lowers their estimate a bit to win business, whereas they don’t have to if their submissions are guaranteed approved.

And then again, maybe I’m just unnecessarily cynical.

Also depends on the parts. OEM vs aftermarket can be a lot of $$. Approved shops may have to use OEM.

I think it’ll go up a lot more, if they know the kid went home to sleep it off before the cops were called.
