Kinja'd!!!

It just needed another distributor. I drove it around the block, so it’s good to go for Houston this weekend! I’m scared that my life is about to become an import version of roadkill. Also I think I will hereby christen this automobile “The Double Threat” because when ever something breaks on this thing, there’s always a second thing that broke simultaneously that causes a similar issue.

Although the distributor must have shit out a little while after the sensor. Because when it was just the sensor, I could get it to run with some throttle and it would backfire, so it was getting spark then.

I’m gonna go dumpster diving in my email now to see if I can return the old distributor, since I’m pretty sure it had a warranty on it. Even if it doesn’t, at least the double threat is running for now.

Let me guess, the EGR line goes right under the distributor and the heat shielding is gone

CONGRATS!!!!

It will be really interesting to see how the new distributor lasts. My general impression about aftermarket distributors and alternator electronics reliability is not good. As was your case when it failed out of the box.

I would think about getting a used distributor like this.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-HONDA-ACCORD-2-3L-IGNITION-DISTRIBUTOR-UNIT/152234376928?hash=item2371e03ee0:g:eSYAAOSw9IpX0XXG&vxp=mtr

Kinja'd!!!

or else a new Honda Ignitor for $194.

Kinja'd!!!

PS - I would take your old distributor apart and check and see if the ignitor is ok. It might make a good spare.

PS - Engine compartment looks great.

It is surprisingly clean. Once I can go to a junkyard and get a new air intake it’ll be mint!

I’m torn, because I could get $50 back for returning it. But I doubt I’ll be able to get the return if I don’t give them back the igniter. Not sure an aftermarket igniter is worth $50.

I saw on a forum that red dust in the distributor is a sign of one of them going out, do you know which one? Because I took the cap and rotor off (I had to buy those separately) and it looked like it had rust on the shaft.

I don’t think so, but I’ll check. I’m pretty sure it’s only wiring under the distributor.

I am not talking about the failed new distributor, it’s junk and likely has a failed ignitor. I am talking about the original distributor.

BTW, I don’t know about red dust. Maybe it happens from bad shaft bushings and the magnets hitting the pickups.

Or keep it and get the El Camino :)

The old one died before I put the new one on, so I tossed it. I wasn’t able to get a refund on the one that went bad, but I was able to return it for a new one. Hopefully it can be useful in a pinch.

I suggest getting a used Honda Distributor and moving the ignitor over. You should be able to get one at a local yard or on ebay such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Accord-Distributor-Ex-2-3L-1998-2002-Vtec-Hitachi/302472547931?fits=Year%3A2000%7CMake%3AHonda%7CModel%3AAccord&hash=item466cc4ce5b:g:QGwAAOSw7eFZvVBi&vxp=mtr

As you have seen, if the ignitor goes, you are stranded. My impression is the Chinese sourced ones are sketchy, if you don’t have a Honda part, you might as well have a complete spare.

This is the ignitor, you can get it through rock auto.

By chance do you know who makes the OEM one? RockAuto carries one made by Delphi and IIRC they make a lot of OEM stuff for American cars at least.

I believe the OEM part is Hitachi. I noted that Standard one I listed Hitachi in the description. I don’t know if they mean Hitachi part or just equivalent to Hitachi.....

I think it just means the Hitachi style. There’s two different distributors for this gen, the TEC and Hitachi ones. The TEC is the older one that just looks like an arch and you have to set timing on. The Hitachi is bulkier, but you don’t have to set ignition timing with it.

BTW, I recommend the OBD2 scanner for $18. I just bought one just because its handy. In fact, my 07 Si flashed a code last night for MAP sensor. I cleared it and it went away. 10 year old cars are like that. It’s handy having a scanner.

Yep, I ordered it! Although since it’s so close to Christmas I imagine it’ll take a while to come in.

Good buy. Getting a scan tool for less than $20 is really handy. Especially with older cars which will have random fails. As an example, my ‘07 had 3 O2 diagnostics last winter. All cleared and took weeks to re-occur. It’s handy to be able to read and clear them.

Good luck with the Accord. They are very reliable. I expect with reasonable care, you can get very good value from it. Plus you will learn a lot about cars.

I like this line of reasoning. You could go far with that logic. Or become David Tracy.
