I saw this foreign patrol car here in Mexico City; I’m not even near Huixquilucan. I know that its okay if they are in pursuit, but county police from another state and another county? Huh...

Kinja'd!!!

And if you wonder, yes... I am still dogging around. Lucky me this fancy place is near a Metro station because there’s no way in hell I’m taking my jeep here on a weekday.

I’ve seen it before, I don’t think they were patrolling or anything. I assume it’s if they need to do some paperwork for transferring custody or something like that.

near by departments all meet up in some building in downtown Houston. Not sure what they do there but the cars are from Galveston, Katy, Woodlands and other near by districts. Not uncommon. Those places are just as far or further than Huixquilucan (tierra de quesadillas machetes!)

I see them often, but in nissan patrols or vw jettas, I’ve never seen a Lancer patrol car.

Here in Mexico City we have Fusions, Chargers, avengers, Durangos, and Rams 1500. Then the PBI (bank and industry) has all kinds of fancy cars!

It’s a common sight. T he Baton Rouge police allow their officers to drive their patrol cars home, so even though I live outside any incorporated areas, we have a Baton Rouge patrol car parked on our street every day.

Officers outside their jurisdiction have no authority to enforce the laws unless they are under a cooperative agreement with local enforcement. With that in mind, I witnessed a couple of goofballs intentionally breaking the law in front of an out-of-town officer. They did everything from tailgating the officer to doing a burnout right next to him when they were stopped at a light. I saw the officer on the radio, but I have no idea whether or not the local police caught up with them.

Some police districts offer training for surrounding areas.

We get that here in Canada ie, RCMP sometimes in municipal force territory.

It’s sometimes to attend court, but also sometimes to coordinate on things. But I guess that would be more like seeing Federales in your area, which probably isn’t unheard of.

I can’t speak about Mexico, but here in Texas, you’ll see out of jurisdiction vehicles due to transfers, training, assisting other departments, task forces, and authorized travel. Also, a lot of states offer cross border reciprocal agreements. So if a pursuit started in Texas, the cop could chase them actoss state lines and arrest them in Oklahoma. Also, at least in Texas, a cop is a cop anywhere in the state. You’re not limited to only your city or county.

Doesn’t the RCMP have nationwide jurisdiction though?

Yeah I assume there is something else going on, but I don’t know Mexico. We have highway patrol, I see them in town and I don’t care because they won’t do anything unless you are doing something crazy, same with the Sheriffs. Then if I see a town cop on the CA highway I don’t sweat it either, they can’t do anything but they could call it in if you were getting nuts.

In the U.S., if you live or work near a federal courthouse, you will see out-of-jurisdiction police vehicles fairly regularly as officers who worked on investigations that were ultimately turned over to the feds may have to come to meet with prosecutors, testify at trials, transfer prisoners, and so on.

I also once saw a huge collection of police and first responder vehicles from all over neighboring jurisdictions—even out of state and from over the border in Canada—parked at a municipal swimming pool, which was a bit jarring....they were all there for a big joint water rescue training.

Mexico City has boroughs so we don’t really have a local police (although they usually report to specific borough presidents or the chief of police) we have state police... Now that car is from a local municipal station (Huixquilucan) from another state...

Federales don’t have much of a preventative role... Most of them only come with court orders. Other than that the handle protection of federal areas (think interstate highways) but if its a state highway each state has their own highway patrol

Yeah... But they look and have a tough sounding name!

But chargers are the most common.

Funny, when the mayor purchased the environmental protection patrol cars they were Jeep Wranglers (one of the least fuel efficient trucks) and V8 chargers (v8!)

Yes and no. Municipalities contract them in lieu of their own police force, they are not really like a traditional federal police force.

It’s kinda a uniquely Canadian thing

aren’t Ontario and BC the only provinces with a Provincial police force?

Sort of. I’ll occasionally see a city police vehicle in another county; the Federal courthouse is in Detroit (Wayne County) so sometimes if an officer from another county (or city in another county) has to go down there; IIRC if they’re in court for a case they’re involved in they’re technically on-duty and will drive using a marked car. Also many cities and townships have “mutual aid” agreements with nearby communities, so it’s not out of the ordinary to see police and emergency vehicles from 2, 3 or even 4 cities on a scene. And of course, the Michigan State Police have jurisdiction over the whole state but they typically patrol the highways and unincorporated areas which don’t have city police or county sheriff coverage. They’ll also be called in for investigations of major incidents and crimes.

now, a police car from another state? never seen it. I don’t know how Mexican states are set up compared to US states, but I’d only ever expect an e.g. Ohio police car to be in Michigan for any purpose other than pursuing someone who crosses state lines. even then they’d probably call ahead and notify the nearest Michigan police agency.

BC has no provincial police force. It’s either RCMP or municipal police forces (i.e. some municipalities have their own police, the rest use RCMP). Areas under direct provincial control in BC use RCMP.
