Holy moly, I did it! I’ve had my Volt for 5 years and it’s officially paid for. Thanks GM for your 0% interest offer! Now we can go a few months with no payments! (of course, my wife’s car now needs a rear main seal, but oh well.)

Just about to cross 70,000 miles in 5 years, and I still love driving it! Summer tires really wake it up, if you don’t have to slow down for turns you get to keep your momentum for the next straight! Exactly what you want from a commuter car, right?

So I bought it in 2012. In 2014 I drove it nonstop from Boston MA to Ft Myers FL, about 1,300 miles (with a co-driver) in 25 hours. While there I loaded enough lumber in the back to build a staircase... a few days later we did the same thing on the return trip! My “average” MPG was about 100 before that trip, it dropped to 80 and 3 years later it’s almost back to 90.

This is an amazing car and it’s only problem is that it’s a bit small. Still highly recommend.

I’m waiting patiently for my loan balance to get back in front of my car’s depreciation curve. The Takata recall put BMW resale value in a tailspin shortly after I bought my car. If I have a few grand to spare at some point, I’ll make a principal payment to help catch things up.

Congrats! That’s gotta feel awesome. I didn’t get 0, but I have 0.9% on the Taco. Two years from now, it’ll be paid off, unless I push up the time frame a bit.

When my Civic dies, I want to pick one of these up. I just passed a red one on my way home today. Really not a bad looking car.

I do wish they made the Volt MPV.

Loving my Sti but not loving my $580 a month loan payment. However, its only a 2 year loan and I only paid cash for the taxes so its not that bad. Its like nothing in interest at least but its still a damper on my fun budget.

I think we have very different definitions of a commuter car though lol. I bought the Subaru as a commuter, it is far more comfortable and quiet and practical compared to my Miata. The whole gets 20mpg, will probably murder me in repairs eventually, and is not particularly well mannered on the highway things are just minor details!

I think mine is worth about $12,000 on the used market, you should be able to find one a little older or with a little higher miles for less.

lol. That’s my mother-in-law’s car. I keep meaning to plunk an L67 on it, she definitely wants it to be faster ;)

Well my previous commuter car was a 3/4 Ton GMC Yukon XL with the 8.1 V8, it was rather thirsty, but nothing could stop it. Except a gas station... The worst was at the highest gas prices, I’d have to swipe my credit card twice at the pump to complete a fill-up! ;)

Current operating costs, electricity ~$25/mo and gas at about $15/mo. Let the savings begin!

Haha yeah that is quite the savings then! No issues yet with battery life? I wonder what replacement costs would be like, if its possible/feasible to do so rather than that becomes end of life for the car. I have always liked the Volt compared to other hybrids. For one, its not a Prius (too damn many of those) and two its actually kind of quick since its running as an electric car first with the gas motor being a generator to fuel the electric motor rather than supplement it. Plus it beats the whole range anxiety thing too but of course theres the plugin problem of having to live somewhere you can plug it in.

I’ve seen a few dropping below the $10k mark. They are getting down there, which is exciting. I think I’m going to drive the Civic at least another 3 years, though (or as long as it holds together, which will likely be a lot longer than that). That, or if a point comes that the economics dictate a switch, I’ll switch then. It’s hard for me to justify buying a new (to me) car when the one I have works. That still doesn’t stop me from wanting one, though!

No issues with battery life at all. It’s worse when it’s cold, and max distance happens around 75-80 degrees, that is stil the same. What’s great about the Volt is that it does not ever need to be plugged in. If you can charge at work or the mall, go ahead, but if you can’t it still gets 40-ish MPG (the newer ones get about 50!). I drive too much to deal with range anxiety, but for the days I don’t I love driving electric.

That and gas is really cheap right now, so there’s not a strong motivation to switch. I was oogling the Volt since it’s ‘07 debut, and it’s really the only thing I’ve ever had an itch to buy for a long time like that. It still makes me smile every day, and will even more once I have the title!
