Kinja'd!!!

What are the best places in Italy to drive? Roads, racetracks, motorsport destinations? I’m traveling to Rome next week with my girlfriend, as part of our university’s winter abroad program. She’s expressed interest in Italy’s rich automotive history. Where should we go?

Not inside Rome proper, that’s for sure, place is the definition of a clusterfuck. Rome’s reasonably close to Vallelunga who if I remember correctly from our trip offer driving experiences, otherwise you could just rent a car and get lost in the mountain roads around Rome. If you’ve got a weekend you could try driving the old Mille Miglia route too:

The FIAT old factory at Lingotto in Turin! :D

Also, you are required to photograph all classic FIAT 500s you see for me. That’s order.

You could do one of those classic 500 rental tours? Just brush up on your non-syncro stickshift skills. :P

If you have time, make sure to visit the Amalfi coast! I honestly wish I spent wayyyy more time there during my trip to Italy last year. The trip overall had 3 days in Rome, 3 days (including driving) in the Florence/Siena area, and then 3 days in Positano. Those 3 days in Positano simply were not enough to appreciate all of the beauty!

And driving there was absolutely frightening which was fun in its own regard! Make sure you are driving something small. Their definition of a “two way” road is questionable at best.

But that clusterfuck of chaos is kind of fun to drive in. If you have ever driven somewhere like NYC, driving in Rome is like that on steroids. It was fun because it was scary. I feel like a moped would be even more entertaining although that is beyond my realm of safety.

Taking avoid highways from Rome and heading north though is also great.
