Cutting the cable: next steps.

I’m taking the leap. Now I need to choose an ISP.

Comcast: current provider. Standalone 75mb is $80/mo. Doubleplay 75mb with basic and no boxes is $50/mo.

Charter: 60mb standalone for $40.

Metronet fiber: $30/mo for 80mb. Absolutely horrific reviews

ATT: DSL. $40/mo for 25mb

CenturyLink: $30/mo for 60mb.

I’m most tempted to make the jump to Charter. I already own my own equipment so that’s a non-issue, it’s more the unknown about the company itself and service levels for my area. Opinions on Script/Charter/TWC?

I had TWC when I lived in Alice Texas, had no problems with the service. Then again I didn’t pay for it. I had ATT in Corpus Christi and San Antonio and it was absolute shit.

Charter is the only option in my area. We’ve got 60mbps at home and internet/phones at work through Charter. The only outage that I can recall over the past 4-5 years or so is when someone with a backhoe took out service to most of two counties.

This was a recent conversation with my ISP.

Me: Hey, my Internet is out. I just had it turned on Sunday when I moved
Cable Company: Yes, it appears that when you moved in the previous resident canceled their cable which canceled yours.
Me: So turn it back on?
Cable: We can’t. We have to start a new account and get a technician out there to review your lines....
Me: ...Ok, while you are doing that paperwork I want to cancel all the cable for everyone on my block
Cable: er...what?
Me: If someone who isn’t me can cancel my internet then I want to cancel everyone’s internet around me as well.
Cable long pause: I’ll send you a tech right now.
Me: Fantastic, thanks. I will retract my order on canceling the block then.

AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) and Comcast are the only ones, and I live in a HUGE metro area. They’re both decent.

CenturyLink sucks, that’s what I have. Granted I’m very rural, but the time it takes to get techs out is horrendous. Also Century link box hardware is limited to 48mb even when we had 100mb service which was actually only 13mb. Now we pay for basic, and we get 1-5mb.

I will say that Xfinity/Comcast is nice for me since you gain access to their nationwide wi-fi network. I use a lot less mobile data now since I can get wi-fi in many common areas. It’s a premium service, but I use the features it offers. I’ve heard good things about charter though for a no-nonsense, heady provider of internet.

I cut the cord a few years ago. I’m not going back. I have a digital antenna, Netflix and Prime. NFL Mobile through Verizon. All my bases are covered.

I have Charter internet and it’s been solid. Their tv is garbage especially compared to Comcast. The interface is straight out of 2003 and they give you a DVR with a woefully small hard drive. So as long as you’re not going to get any tv service from them they’re ok.

One other thing to consider is each ISP’s bandwith caps. I know AT&T and Comcast both have a 1TB cap, and that is something you can eat through quickly with high bitrate streaming.

Choices? I’m envious of anyone who has choices. My only option is TWC/Spectrum. I pay for 100mb/s service and actually achieve 35-45. Our subdivision used to also have a crappy 6mb/s DSL option through ATT, but they dropped the service a few years ago.
