You want me to convince you?

1) the first guy is dumb enough to call it a “Dodge Duster”

2) the El Camino looks like it’s had an engine fire.

‘74 was about the worst year for the Duster. And at $1900 with bondo falling out and showing the rust spots I say CP.

‘80 El Camino would be cool, especially with a manual. However, ‘Bill of Sale’ - red flag. Perhaps you can beat him down well below the $1500.

If I had to I’d go with the El Camino. You’ll need a reliable daily though while it’s down for some of the more serious work. And it has a VIN so you need to make sure it wasn’t stolen somewhere along the line.

Easy. One word: carbureted

ETA: well, there’s more. You’re frustrated over a modern Accord. Do you have any experience driving a domestic from the ‘70s? Certainly can be done, but it’s a whole new paradigm.

I figure it appears to be rust free, you don’t see too many, and frankly it’s just flat out cool. Can’t be too hard to get it running if it’s all there.

Budget some $ for chassis and brake repairs, maybe drop in a small v8 (something that 3 on the tree can handle) upgrade the wheels/tires.

Then just drive it.

Idk how a missing title would work. I don’t think it’d be too much of an issue. In WA to just went to the DOL and got a “in lieu of” title for a small fee.

It’s also an old car, so I don’t really think a missing title is all that suspicious.

Idk if it runs, but it doesn’t say it doesn’t!

It has seatbelts, so apart from chassis strength it’s on par with the Accord (driver airbag doesn’t work and there’s an internal fault with the SRS computer.)

Alright - I’m nearing 40. My friends and family drove cars like these in my high school years. You have literally no clue how fucking terrible malaise cars were. The Jalopnik cult of automotive terribleness has gotten to you. First it was Murilee Martin, and somehow the torch was passed to Torchinsky.

First, the Duster:

At $1900 it’s well into crack pipe territory. It’s a $700 car. It’s a base-model Ordinary slant six duster with no remarkable options. Also, I hope you like 80 hp, steering so vague it makes an old Jeep feel like a 90s Honda, and 15 mpg. Along with air conditioning that won’t work, bushings, tie rods, ball joints, and all rubber parts completely deteriorated. No. Just no.

The El Camino: offer $300 and see if he bites. Because you’ll spend another $1500 just getting it running and on the road - and even then you’ll be spending your nights chasing electrical gremlins that make you wonder if Delco wasn’t just the American arm of Lucas Electronics.

Seriously - the Accord is a far better car than both of these shitheaps combined.

Missing title is fine IF the owner has it in his name. Otherwise you have to file with the state as an abandoned vehicle and wait to see if the previous owner claims it.

This. All the car shows like Roadkill glorify old American cars, but owning one as a sole daily driver is not something I’d recommend unless you spend thousands and thousands replacing damn near everything. Basically if you buy a classic car for $1500 you can expect to spend at least $3000 getting it to a decent state, aka where it starts every time, has mostly working electronics, and stops reliably.

The last carbureted car I owned had iirc, 3 electrical connections and was insanely complex. When I ‘simplify & lighten’-ed it with a Weber I had 1&1/2 milk crates full of crap I no longer needed.

Kinja'd!!! "MoCamino" (mocamino)

In that condition and with no title, $1500 is CP all day long for that El Camino. Don’t get me wrong. I love my El Camino. I drive it every day that I can. (Meaning any day we don’t have ice/snow in southwest Missouri.) But as the owner of a 5th gen El Camino, I can tell you: run far and fast from the car you linked to. If they GAVE it to you, you’d have more than $1500 in it just getting it to be a semi-reliable daily driver.

With that said: in Texas where cold start/carburetion issues should be minimal, with your stated experience tracking down vacuum leaks, a late-’70s piece of Detroit steel could be a reasonable daily driver - IF you start with the right candidate. Just be prepared for age-related parts replacement OFTEN and really horrible gas mileage compared to that Accord.
