Help Me Find My Uncle An SUV

Hey guys!

I love to research cars to buy, and I sometimes get asked to help others do it too. Not like Tom McParland, but as close as I can get. The problem with this time is that I don’t know SUVs at all. I read a lot of blogs and auto sites so I have general knowledge, and I know how to find what I need, but this is my start.

Recommend me an SUV, new or recent, that has ALL the driver assists. We’re talking collision avoidance, cameras, lane keeping, everything. Not Tesla autopilot, but just about. I don’t know his budget. He certainly can afford something good, but I think practically he’d shy away from anything over $60,000.

My first thought went to something like the Volvo XC60 with all their safety claims. He has a bad eye, and is dealing with other medical mobility issues, so safety is high on my priority list. What do you guys think?

It’s probably the best choice

If he can’t see, not driving is by far the best choice. Or the flimsiest vehicle available that is least likely to kill someone else.

Believe me, I’ve tried. I doubt he could get a new car for anything close to splitting even on Uber trips before he’s legally barred from driving. But, if I can’t convince him to give up the cause, I’m sure as hell going to try to advise the best fitting option.

XC60/90 or RX350. Thats the 3 with the most standard safety features.

A friend of mine just rented a Volvo SUV (of some sort, but I assume XC60) with all the drive aids including automatic steering, braking, and adaptive cruise. Apparently said features were spooky good. His exact words were “the robots are taking over”.

My dad also just recently did a tour of SUVs and large sedans, looking at the Audi, Honda, Acura, Toyota, and Infinity options and eventually settled on the XC90... for some reason. (My vote was a Jag or the S90, but here we are)

So, tl;dr: The Volvo(s) recommend well based on your criteria.

Volvo is a great starting and ending point. Don’t forget the V90 XC, and a refreshed V60 is coming soon if he wants something less tall.

Also consider Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring, CX-9 Signature, Lincoln MKX/Nautilus, MKC, Jaguar F-Pace and E-Pace, Land Rover/Range Rover (all), and, uhhh... I can’t think of any more I’d recommend.

I don’t know much about the XC40, but that also might be worth a look. Smaller and therefore less surface area to run into other things, just as safe (I assume because Volvo) but what I don’t know is if it is available with all the collision stuff.

If he isn’t married to an SUV, I think you can get all the same tech on an S60 instead, which has the same benefit of there being less of it and is probably easier to park and see out of.

Pretty much what everyone else has said with Volvo, Lincoln, etc. Short reviews for those I’ve driven:

Lincoln products (in MKZ/Continental): some people complain of ping-ponging with the lane keep assist, others say the auto cruise is too aggressive at low speeds and too conservative at high speeds. Auto emergency brake also startles you if you don’t know what to expect.

Volvo XC60 T8 R-design: very nice seats, definitely one of the most interesting powertrains on the market. The autocruise with lane centering was very easy to engage, haven’t experienced the auto emergency braking. Lane keep warning was intuitive but not annoying.

Caddy CT6: although not an SUV, the Supercruise was easy to engage and worked really well, lane centering and following traffic has good feel to it.

2017+ Camry: another non-SUV, but feel like it needs to be talked about. Lane keep assist is utterly annoying, autocruise functions decently well. I’ve heard some people say if you’re following another vehicle with ACC on, the Camry will just disengage ACC when it loses track of the lead vehicle.

Thanks a ton. I’ll suggest some of the non SUV options you and others mentioned. He went from a Honda Element to a Ford Explorer so I was just trying to keep somewhat similar.

Lots of cars have all the safety gizmos available. Here’s a what I could find well below $50k with all the driver aids plus active cruise, up through Infiniti because I got tired of messing with configurators. Someone else can pick up the rest of the alphabet. There are plenty of options in all size segments. So I’d say to narrow things down maybe figure out what other stuff he wants like size, engine, mpg, etc. and then pick something in that class that has the options available.

Jeez I had no idea how prevalent the tech was given that I don’t really want it for myself. Thank you. I don’t know if he’s very picky on all that stuff so I’m going to have to think about what might just be best for him (location of the nearest dealership, ride height, etc).

Yeah it’s very common nowadays, it’s really just a matter of if it’s standard or part of a package. The trick is some cars will have most of the driver aids but not active cruise, which speaking from experience with it in my wife’s Subaru Impreza, is a very nice feature.
