Kinja'd!!!

It’s been over two weeks. I think we’re getting along much better than day one. Agatha is eating and drinking more frequently and ordering #2s consistently so she’s healthy as can be.

She’s especially getting use to me handling her more and more when I need to clean her tank of poos. She trusts me more and more every day and that makes me happy. Just knowing that there’s something that relies on me to give them a happy and healthy life has given my life more meaning and value.

Kinja'd!!!

She’s not as playful as a cat or as chill as a dog yet. But she’s the companion I’ve needed for a long time. My little apex predator!

First time I ever saw a gecko was in my apartment in Houston. Freaked me out. Then I learned that people in NYC actually keep them as pets to help control the roaches. So I put some water out, named him Newt, and started seeing a lot less roaches.

Newt was always tough on the cockroaches. Almost racist, one might say. But when he saw all the dreamers making lives and with jobs...well his heart grew three sizes that day.

Ah, another reptile keeping OPPO. I only keep snakes but some lizards do catch my eye from time to time. It’s generally good to give them a week ( more is better ) to acclimate to their new environment before handling. Also those analogue thermometers and hydrometers are garbage. So if you use them I’d replace them with electronic ones ASAP.

Grinch is already stuck in my head, I think I’ve passively watched it 5-6 times already this December. #kids

She’s my first reptile. I’ve has fish and hermit crabs in middle school and am allergic to furry friends as much as I adore them. I have a heat pad but no thermometer. We keep our house at 65-67F this time of year and she’s seemed to be comfortable switching between the hot and cold parts of her tank so I wasn’t concerned about a thermometer yet. I’d definitely go digital when I get one.

Awesome! I was told they had a lifespan of around 10-15 years but I hope she lives longer than that!

Just realized you have a female, yes that’s about right for females. Males can live for 20 - 30 years.

You probably know this, but don’t use sand in the tank, either use lizard mats, or even better paper towels. Super easy to clean up and their claws don’t get stuck in them. Just double up on the paper towels above where their heat pad is located.

Keep a hide box with some damp paper towels, one on the hot side of the tank and another on the cold side. Though mine never used the cold side one.

They will shed and need to be moist when they do it. Keep a careful watch on leftover shed getting stuck on their eye or fingers. When they are about the shed they become pail, make sure to help it along by misting some water on her during this period and keeping her hide box moist.

It recently cost me $300 in vet fees for an eye infection caused by leftover shed getting stuck in one of his eyes. To be honest, except for that one instance, keeping a Leopard Gecko is about as easy as keeping a pet rock. Super easy and rarely causes any fuss or financial pain. My Leopard Gecko is 20 years old and still looks young.

Is that heating pad on a thermostat? If not it’s unsafe to run one without some sort of regulation, a dimmer can work in a pinch. Make sure you get a heat gun to properly measure surface temps. Jump Starts are decent, a Herpstat or VE-200 is better but a Jump Start is better than nothing.
