Ever start your car (or need to make a quick stop at home or work) and realize you need to get back in your house/condo/apartment/mailbox/work/etc. but don’t want to shut off your car and don’t have a fancy remote start?

Well with the way the old FCA keys are designed (and most older MBs I take it) you can EASILY remove the key ring, and any attached keys without struggling with the ring, or removing the fob from the ignition.

< Like this, but bigger.

Its the simple things that I appreciate.

I keep my car and house keys separate from each other. I started this habit when I had my Mazdaspeed 6 which had this doofy credit card shaped key fob. Technically there’s a little hole at the top right for a key ring but it was way awkward.

Kinja'd!!!

I carried the habit through to when I had 2 cars so I grabbed whichever car key I was driving at that moment. I suppose now there’s nothing really stopping me from putting my house keys on my BMW fob but I just...don’t.

Those Mazda keys were the worst possible design. People would DRILL HOLES IN THEM to attach key rings when they lost/broke the little string.

This is much smarter than a smartkey.

Just the other day, the kids were in the backseat watching a DVD while I ran in for some Chinese take out. I could not leave the car running OR in the accessory position or the key wouldn’t let me lock the doors.

It was really good Chinese. Nobody stole the car.

Still, an easy fix for what seems to be a dumb oversight. Honda thinks you must never want to lock you car while it’s running. Have they ever heard of Canada?

Here are all my keys. I have no particular desire to have that keychain on my house keys taking up valuable pocket space, but my wife gave it to me so I keep using it.

I’ll have to try some possible combos in the Durango of locking it with the key, the button on the door, or using the remote start if it has a “quick stop” feature like our Mazda had.

All I have is car key/house key/work key. Other keys are elsewhere to be easily used when needed.

Can’t tell you how many fingernails I wrecked taking the ring off other car’s keys because I or the kids forgot something in the house...

This. I have the “key” ring and the “car key” ring. The keys keyring also has a small carabiner in case the two feel like hooking up.

This is why I have a carabiner on my car key with the house and work keys on them.

I’ve never found one small enough that I like that’s not too bulky in my pocket, or that hangs too low and bumps my knee while driving.

My Skoda Key doesn’t do that but I got some of these from work.

They push together and to open them to have to push the two ends out and pull open. Used them for years.

Kinja'd!!!

But then I also have one of these.

This exactly. I just use a real carabineer. And yes...I have actually used it to rappel at work.

You keep the car key separate from the rest. The car key is solo when in car mode

Sounds like an extra step to be used constantly, whereas I only need to remove the key from the fob occasionally when I forgets stuffs.

My ‘93 f150 has a neat feature where you can remove the key from the ignition while the truck is running. Now that’s not a factory feature, but it’s a feature none the less

My ‘77 Firebird had that feature.... I could also turn the ignition back to ACC to listen to the radio without keys.

Thanks to the brick of keychains my aunt who sold me the car carried around in the 80's.

My parents keep their keys on ones rated at 150lbs and they are going strong after years of abuse and mom purse duty. I need to upgrade to a real one for when I need to do stupid stuff.

My sisters 2003 Saturn Ion had that feature. It was brilliant when he trunk button broke and you had to open the trunk with the key.

My ignition is just busted, I can start my truck with anything that can turn the ignition. I’ve used a screw driver multiple times to start my truck.

My grandpa’s old Lada had that feature too! As a kid, I always thought it was nifty how he could yank the key out of the ignition and leave the car running while he went to go close and lock the garage doors by hand (because automatic doors are too much of a luxury in small-town Russia).

My 92 Grand Marquis has the keypad on the door so I can lock/open the the car from the outside while it’s still running. And I NEVER keep extra keys on the car key ring. One, the extra weight, if excessive (like your aunt), can mess up the ignition switch over time (my family and I hang on to cars long enough that it could be a problem). Two, since we hang on to cars forever, there’s a few in the family pool to choose from so it doesn’t make sense to attach house keys to car keys.

I have never combined my car keys with my house keys. These days i have one of those smart lock things for my house (Kevo) and it has an app for the phone, so physical keys are not necessary.
My complaint though is that my Audi key is not removable from the fob so i cannot lock my glovebox when i have to valet.
