Kinja'd!!!

Today, in unnecessary car shopping with E90M3 , we find this E60 . A car that has aged well , is sporting my favorite color , and has the optimum number of pedals.

Kinja'd!!!

At times, I wonder if I should have gotten a green BMW as my second car. I always wanted a green M3. I already have the M3, might need to work on the green part.

Speaking of green M3s, this M3 which was previously featured is still for sale.

Kinja'd!!!

Might be my “you got a new job making oil money” present to myself, if I get a new job making oil money.

Also came across this X5 .

Kinja'd!!!

Which is interesting because it comes with one of these:

Those are nice, specially that E46... which is my favorite BMW body type.. and in that green it looks amazing!

But a real find would be a Cayenne GTS with a manual box!

It might be a good thing I lack both space and money to own 3 BMWs, otherwise that E46 would be in a shop getting a PPI.

I once saw one red low mileage, manual E46 here in Mexico City only demanding 15 grand. But I don’t have the money (or the space) to house such a car. I love e46 I think that those are the best looking 3 series body!

I’ve heard from multiple sources that the stick shift X3s and X5s are pretty durable city runners. Yeah they’re soft roaders, but they’re reliable and quick, and pretty fun for a family hauler. I keep looking at manual X5s for fun. I think I’d be okay with that option.

That E60 is pre-LCI. I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

I had to look at it again, it is pre-LCI; I had incorrectly assumed that all the 2007s were LCIs, as all 09 E90s were LCIs.

Why wouldn’t you touch it?

And yet this is where the weirdness/fondness Americans have for model years comes into play. LCI came around June/July 2007 with some cars being a weird parts bin special. So it has to at least be a 2008 for the possibility of it being full LCI, 2009 to make sure it received all the upgrades.

BTW, this particular car also comes with the small screen without sat nav. While the CCC sat nav is terribly outdated and every modern phone app is better, I would hate having to look at that plastic frame around the screen which just screams cheapskate. BMW found a great way of punishing people for going for lower spec cars. The E9xs at least had the no screen option.

As to the LCI vs pre-LCI discussion: Anecdotal evidence from a British E60/61 FB group suggests that they did more during the refresh than what you can read on Wikipedia (door cards, tail lights, engines, gearboxes...). It’s only anecdotal but with a sample size of 15K members. I’ve seen political polls where they ask fewer people and predict a whole country.

The British like the pre-LCI cars as they seem to be grandfathered into newer road tax laws (I don’t fully understand it, apart from the fact that they are cheaper).

Yet, the pre-LCI drivers are those who always complain about stuff being broken, warning lights etc... most of it being electrical gremlins that can a PITA to diagnose. The LCI drivers are more in the “I’ve had mine for x years and xx k miles and it didn’t really ask for anything unusual” camp.

Also the dealer I got mine from who specialises in trade in BMWs, told me that we wouldn’t put a pre-LCI on his lot.

A lot of this may be down to age, but I still strongly believe that they changed more than what they own up to during the refresh. A slightly stronger connector here, better water proofing for one of the many CUs there, and so on can make for a much better owning experience a few years down the line.

Oh, and they fixed the overheating issue the old CCC iDrive units in the pre-LCI cars had. They all die. Some sooner, some later. Some for good, and all at once, some suffer a slow painful death where they work intermittendly from time to time. Completely gone with LCI. And that’s not even discussing the CiC units fitted into newer E60s.

Not being an E60 owner, I didn’t know any of that.

I don’t know why we still use MYs, we should just use YOM.

What do all the acronyms you used mean ? Still a good read though.

LCI is BMW speak for Life Cycle Impulse basically a facefift.

CCC is the older generation of the iDrice system (Car Communication Computer). The wheel and one menu button. Uses DVD drive for sat nav.

In 09 they switched over to the newer CIC system (Car Information Computer). It has the wheel and several shortcut buttons around it. Biggest difference is that it has an internal hard drive for sat nav data and mp3s.

Newer BMWs have NBT (Next Big Thing).
