At what point are these "SUVs" just hatchbacks?

No ground clearance, no cladding/ body protection. What make this any different to a 2 series active tourer thingy other than styling differences?

It’s a hatchback with enhanced ride height.

The cladding is silver paint on the non-M Sport that becomes body color on the M Sport.

Seat height.

“Crossovers” all have higher seat height from the ground. That requires added roof height, taller seat mounts, and apparently, softer suspension as well.

Big ass wheels with tire sizes that will make your eyes water when time comes to replace them. That’s pretty much the only difference I see. Think of it as a factory donk.

So, really, what these are is small minivans.

They are hatchbacks. Unless, they have 3rd row seating; then, they are station wagons.

I’m almost ashamed to admit that I’m starting to want a tall hatchback. Or at least something with a higher seating position. Mostly because modern headlights are fucking blinding and all at my eye level in the Legacy. It’s bad enough just when it’s dark, but when you throw in rain as well, I might as well be blind.

Most station wagons don’t have 3rd row seating. They do have a D-pillar though.

My car has a very high seat height compared to what I expect out of a car. Out of three cars, the oldest is the most car-like, with a seat height about 1' from the floor (maybe less; that car is so freaking comfortable), a 2008 with about 1.5', and I swear my 2015 is over 2'. Soon we’ll all be sitting on bar stools in there vertical tube shaped cars.

Mine, objectively, looks more like a tiny minivan than it does a car.

The problem isn’t stock modern headlights, it’s the people that don’t adjust them right after a lift or put illegal aftermarket HID conversion kits/bulbs in their cars. I keep getting blinded by dipshits. I would support local law enforcement impounding and crushing any vehicle with these illegal headlights or failing to adjust their lights properly after a lift. There are also jackasses that run off road lights on the road, I almost got out to yell at one recently that was behind us for miles. It was so bright you could feel the heat inside our car.

I also blame baby boomers for the proliferation of ultra-bright headlights. They are losing their eyesight and instead of accepting that they should simply not drive at night, they get brighter headlights until everyone else is going blind prematurely.

Call them tall wagons, cross/utility vehicles, segment busters, sports tourers, sport wagons, crossovers, cross-trainers, or just plain station wagons. Whatever they’re named, they were the most obvious new design trend at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Although today’s crossover vehicles such as the Toyota Highlander, BMW X5 or Buick Rendezvous straddle the line between car and SUV, the new breed are more a mix of car and minivan:

Since ever.

Well, to be fair, “minivan” isn’t a segment in Europe, where they have a lot of tall boxes that aren’t crossovers. Instead it’s MPV, and the sliding door isn’t necessary.

But, really, if we call tall hatchbacks minivans regardless of whether they have body cladding, and the meme sticks, we do a couple differentthings.

We apply the minivan stigma to crossovers, causing people to go back to wagons.

We make people that need a minivan realize that they should just buy the damn minivan, because it’s better at being a minivan than a crossover is.

I’m fine with that too. True SUVs are getting rare, just like RWD cars. You have to know the models you’re looking for just to find exactly what you want.

For other people who “Rode in an explorer when they were younger” would probably be happy with the new Explorer.

We apply the minivan stigma to crossovers, causing people to go back to wagons.

If only it could work like that. (We both know that “normal” people don’t listen to what we have to say about cars anyways)

My wife refuses to get a wagon because she sees it as a “mom’s car”. Nevermind the fact that she is a mom, and nevermind the fact that she drives an Outback (which is exactly a jacked up wagon), she refuses to get a wagon.

There are a lot of car stigmas out there that don’t make sense.

True story: I was looking at winter tire sizes for my F30, 225/45/18 translates to 225/50/R17 for -1 size. Interestingly the X1 uses 225/55/R17 for its winters, which was cheaper than mine.

Coincidentally my Solstice had the 225/55/R17, so I opted to carry on using those with new rims.

Aftermarket HIDs and lifted trucks are a whole other level of awful. I mean factory headlights, at least where I live it’s gotten way worse in the last year or so driving at night. Anything vaguely premium has super intense headlights that are mounted up high, and are painfully bright. When they have their high beams on, it’s just ridiculous.

This is very true, but because everyone keeps getting taller vehicles, I’m now shorter than most things on the road. I don’t want to be taller than everyone, I just want to be around the same height, especially at night. When I had my Blazer, I wasn’t getting lights in my eyes nearly as much, and it does help for seeing past parked cars when pulling out and such. I also do like 90% of my driving in the city, where all of those things make more of a difference, and driving dynamics don’t matter.
