Kinja'd!!!

Recently, there have been two fatal accidents in the area that I think about often.

Both involved a driver either drunk, speeding or both. In both cases, the only fatality was the driver.

Crash 1:

A 17 year old in his parents BMW 335i who had been drinking crashed near my house and was thrown clear and killed as he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. The four others in the car were fine. So he was drinking, speeding, violating his license by the number of people in the car and not wearing his seatbelt.

Crash 2:

Yesterday an Audi R8 took off from a light driving onto a bridge as quickly as he could. He lost control and hit a taxi. The R8 exploded and killed him instantly. The crash shut down an important artery into the downtown core for a full day.

I’ve seen bodies after crashes, and dealt with families who have lost people in crashes or had their lives changed due to the actions of others.

I feel for the families of those killed, but as for the people themselves, fuck them. Their decisions put others at risk or harmed others.

What does Oppo think? Am I too hard on those killed? I’ve asked others and opinion seems split.

Nope, you’re not too hard on them.

BC also needs progressive penalties to deal with the untouchable guillotine-worthy devilspawn of dirty money driving like idiots in the lower mainland. Hit them where it hurts, their illicit family fortunes.

Are you asking did they deserve to die? To that I would say no

Are you asking should we feel remorse for not caring that they died? Probably not, they made their own bed

I feel no empathy for them either, wreckless idiots that’s what they are.

I hope this guy really gets to understand how much of an idiot he is as he sits in jail for vehicular manslaughter.

No one truly deserves to die. Its just really hard to suppress our instincts of what someone deserves.

If you look at it from the law perspective, a judge shouldn’t sentence on what the criminal deserved but on what the law states, which tries to be objective. Its a fascinating debate that includes topics like the death penalty.

Yeah, I don’t think they deserved to die, but they died as a result of their own actions that put others at risk, so I don’t really feel bad about it.

Yeah, in BC this goes beyond just idiots driving badly into a whole social thing about...things.

Also, did I invite you to this? Not sure if you can make it: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/possible-vancity-oppo-meet-1821369202

I think I’ll do something in the summer too

had one near me that killed three.. genius decided the best way to avoid the traffic up ahead was to just turn his trucklet around and drive away from it.. (presumably to the previous off ramp)

he didnt get very far

(edit)... so no... not being to hard them... sucks they died...but at least they only took themselves out

When one has effectively bought their way into the country, I think the poorly raised ones also develop a mentality that they can get out of anything. And they are probably not incorrect. Time for progressive fines. Spawn of a zillionaire creates carnage? There goes the trust fund and the real estate used to launder money.

Not sure if I will be free then, but I usually make it up for the auto show at the end of March. Weather is sometimes crap, but by then, I need a long weekend.

I use to be a seatbelt engineer and it makes you pretty cold to all of this. You work your whole career to make better safety devices that save lives and then people don’t use them and end up dead. I’m to the point now that when i drive past a crash I wonder if the airbags deployed correctly and if the seatbelt tensioner achieved full stroke. I’m not concerned with the people anymore. Don’t like wearing that seatbelt? Fine, but I have no sympathy

This is why safety systems are a mandatory reality. You can’t fix stupid so everything has to be designed to mitigate stupidity. Trying to fix the idiot will just create a better idiot. Sure, education is a way to fix that but it’s not foolproof. Accidents happen, things don’t perform as designed, and sometimes the stars align in the right way to murder us. This all is why everytime I get in a new car that is too heavy, I can’t see out of it, and it feels slow even though it has 200+hp, I just remember that this is all part of that mitigation. Thankfully older cars still exist so that I can go off and risk death constantly but I know some day there is a bleak future of self driving cars where any sort of fun is just too dangerous to partake in. But this is why I have multiple hobbies so that when cars go away I still can enjoy life’s other wonders. Thankfully that time is a long way away though but I’ll still enjoy now while I can!

People who still refuse to wear a seat belt astound me. My dad is like this, always have to remind him to buckle up like a frigging child. I guess they grew up in a time without it but damn it’s so easy to see the importance of a seat belt. It’s not like we have to use latch and link 5 point harnesses every day so it’s simple too! I get annoyed at the damn seat belt chimes though. I don’t need an idiot light to remind me that I want to live.

Roughly half of all traffic fatalities are people who are unbelted and people get all excited about autonomous cars because they think it will be safer. Maybe it will but as a society we can’t even get people to pluck the low hanging fruit. On the bright side seatbelt usage rates have been going up with every generation so there is that. Also we had case studies where unbelted people have collided with the other belted occupants of the car and killed them. An unbelted person in a crash is a meat cannon ball and a danger to everyone else in the car. That’s why people have 2 choices in my car, buckle up or walk.

This guy recently died by my parents: http://waltham.wickedlocal.com/news/20171205/waltham-man-suffers-life-threatening-injuries-in-vehicle-fall

The story I heard was a bit confusing, but it sounds like a group of people were hooning in an office parking lot, he fell out of a doorless Jeep, and was run over. Apparently a bunch of people were out by the site of the accident doing memorial burnouts last week.

I feel bad for the kid (and the girl who ran him over for that matter), but I also can’t help feel they were almost certainly doing something exceptionally stupid.

I believe that the term you are looking for is “Darwin Award.”

It’s still sad when somebody dies, especially due to their own stupidity. On the flip side, it’s ok to be mad about traffic congestion caused by a Darwin Award winner.
