The madness continues: The 2018 BMW X2 is $4500 more than an X1

Kinja'd!!!

And it starts at $39,995 . Car and Driver has an early break down of the price and the optional packages. Things like a $4650 M Sport Package, and a Premium Package for $2600. It looks like a fully loaded X2 will cross a wtf inducing 50 grand.

Fog lights in the worst possible place just like all the new bmw cuvs and the greenhouse is way too short so it looks like the bottom portion is extremely pudgy with a sedan greenhouse plopped on top. Only bmw suvs worth a damn are the x5 and x6 with the big motors and the 3-hundred-whatever section rear tires.

When do we get cars that have arrowslits instead of windows? 2020?

I’m guessing windows will be phased out entirely and be replaced by monitors. Because safety.

The design seems to purposely make it look small, the same way they did with the first gen 1 Series. And the fog lights are in a bad place. So much so that I dont even think you can call them fog lights at this point. Weird thing most people might not have noticed: BMW fog lights on all X vehicles double as cornering lamps.

If you enjoy a 60hr valve seal replacement job every 50k.

It’s basically the same proportions as the Mercedes GLA, but (hopefully?) with more room inside.

A loaded up X1 xDrive28i M Sport is also over $50k.

We’re almost there. Backup cameras and blind spot detection already compensate for the near-zero rear quarter visibility on most cars.

Our old X3 had a window sticker of something like 54,000, so while I still wouldn’t pay that much for a next to I’m really not that surprised.

Line up the two xDrive28i models and you’re looking at a price differential of $2500, which still strikes us as a questionable amount for a less-practical, only slightly more stylish piece with five fewer cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.

So, for more money it must have more power? Oh. So then it’s marginally bigger? No. “Slightly more stylish...” ah, I see.

given the success BMW has found with the similarly irrational X4 and X6 models, it surely has reason to believe that the X2 will find a customer base all its own

There you have it.

Please remake the E46 wagon.

To be fair:

Admittedly, the comparison isn’t exactly apples to apples, because the X1 offers a lower-priced front-wheel-drive variant, while the X2 comes standard with all-wheel-drive. Line up the two xDrive28i models and you’re looking at a price differential of $2500

Still a lot for a tall hatchback. A car like a Golf Alltrack wagon will give you more space and AWD for a lot less money.

Buyers will see nothing but the badge. They wont care about the irrationality of it sadly. 5 fewer cubic feet of space is huge. Besides that, any X vehicle other than the only 2 that make sense, the X3 and X5 are irrational.

Or if you must have something like this just go used or CPO.

I think you mixed some words up in that last sentence, but you’re right about the badge. And it probably won’t be awful to drive, so there’s at least that.

Yea your right I fixed it. I meant are irrational not and irrational. But its still a pointless vehicle that sadly will sell.

The real WTF here is that BMW offers a FWD CUV.

Does it even matter? For a CUV? I bet the vast majority of the target demographic wouldn’t notice the difference (snow excluded).

Hell, I still don’t understand why there’s a GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado except history and brand loyalty. But if you stopped making the GMC line one day, wouldn’t all those people just buy the Chevy instead over the Ford? Who said people are rational, though, anyway? Not I.

I never got it either until I sold them. GMC and Chevy make money for GM hand over fist. Other than money it makes no sense.
