Seriously though, I thought the lack of power in this car would irritate me far more than it actually does 99.5% of the time. She’s an absolute blast to drive and I’m already building my catalog of mods to pile on as soon as I fail to talk myself out of buying the first one.

Glad your enjoying your car mate.

The whole power thing is lost on me.

You can have all the power you want but if you haven’t the car to handle the power properly, it’s pointless.

I’m more comfort, build quality, road manners, etc... power is low down on my list. I mean I don’t want it to struggle up hills, under full load, etc... but I’m also aware that the top speed limit in the U.K. is 70mph, so I don’t need anything that will out perform a dragster just something that will handle the road and handle what I want it to carry.

What’s the most horsepower you’ve owned?

I used to think power was pretty meaningless, but now that I have a 400+ hp car...power is the best!

My problem isn’t really ever racing but just passing on the interstate. That’s where I have been hesitant about getting a Toyobaru.

I understand your point better now than I would have 6 months ago. My future cars had to have increasingly more power so I could take advantage of 500+hp. 600 would be better.

But then I did a 9,300 km (6,800 miles) across Canada,

 and my perspective changed.

The biggest cost was petrol. As long as I have sufficient power to overtake quickly and safely, fuel efficiency is perhaps more important than ridiculous power.

But then you turn the corner and find yourself in Mexico, and great gobs of power corrupts one.

My first car had 68 hp. My most powerful car today has 350. But 500-600 hp isn’t my goal anymore.

Congrats. I think the 86 is great for real car nuts. One of my friends has one and he hoons the ever loving shit out of his. He is he only gay dude I know who can qualify as a real “car guy” who tracks and mods his cars.

I’m not disrespecting or insulting the car, but what made you choose the 86 over a miata?

I had the chance to test drive the 86 and the engine felt as if it was struggling to gain revs (it was a yr old car and had 3k miles on it). NA and NB miata’s engines feel like they just want to keep reving and want to be thrashed.

Am I missing something?

You can still do it in one of these - you just need to use all the revs. I don’t find mine any worse than my GTI was for overtaking.

It’s the present car. It’s the smallest engine of them but the most horse power. Modern day engines have come a long way.

piglet has 148bhp which is about average to more than average in many modern cars sold here.

She’s no slouch and when needed to overtake another car quickly she won’t let you down, push the go pedal hard and she goes.

12/20/2017 at 13:46, STARS: 0

My Piglet is a Passat sized car with a 148bhp, 1.4TSi ACT. She’ll sit at 70mph all day if asked and if asked to do more, she hasn’t grumbled about it.

There are sections of our motorway where I am that are more 90mph sections (if you were to do what traffic was doing), then turn into 100-110mph sections after dark.

Mine has 148bhp will sit at 70mph all day, will cart all the stuff I have for car cleaning if visiting a friend to clean get car and give me 45mpgUK around town and on the motorway. Any larger engine would literally just be there to pay fuel tax to the government.

My shopping criteria has always been “fast enough for any passing manoevre I’m brave enough to try”. That’s become an easier bar to meet over the years, as the average car gets quicker and I get more mortal.

There’s a lot to be said for cars which strain your neck muscles, though...

Cool. It’s static other times, but mentally I’m seeing the Panda clap.

I’ve seen a couple of her blogs and love how she goes off on tangents mid sentence, and starts pulls faces.

She has the Panda hat on in one and went to wipe her face with both hands, then moved her hands away and in what looked like actual shock said, ‘I have paws’, then did a quick movement with her hands and then continued talking like nothing happened.

Yeah that’s wh y I said passing though. Sitting at 70+ is no problem . It getting to 70 or going above 70 quickly that is. Especially when I have awful drivers in front of me that merge into an area where everyone is doing 80 at 35-40. Very dangerous and I’ve only saved it with power many times.

I could be very happy dailying an 86 or an ND Miata (if I never had to pick up the kids). My last car was an ‘05 Mazda 3s hatch that I loved and enjoyed flogging around town for 7 years and 90k miles. But now that I’ve had my M3 for 5 years, I do feel like it’d be a bit hard to go back to a slower car... I’m very “normalized” to the power at this point. I suppose it’s like any drug - you’re always chasing that first high, and need more of it as time goes on to get close to that feeling.

I definitely hear you about getting more “mortal” - when I’m out on an empty road and the speedo begins to rise, I do start considering a little earlier what would happen if I blew a tire...

Mine will happily and easily pull past another if asked.

Sometimes you overtake, commit yourself and then something in the distance doesn’t look as far away as it did, she’s answered whenever I’ve asked her to pull away harder and faster to get me out the ‘danger zone’.

I took the power addiction to the point where more was going to be relationship or life threatening - I had a race car with 450hp/ton up until a year ago, and before that I was DDing an XJR. The 86 was a conscious decision to try a new drug - slowcarfast. So I feel you....

I actually don’t find the 86 a lot less useful for overtaking than the Jag was, though. It’s certainly nice to be able to simply mash the throttle and have the auto and the supercharger do the business, but with the 86 I just find myself staying on the throttle longer, and achieving a higher speed at the end of the maneuver. It’s a lot more precise in its handling, which makes me more confident carrying higher terminal speeds and braking deeper into the corner at the end of the straight. Not a tradeoff which applies to an M3 though, I guess.

Rear seat’s a waste of time for actual humans. But its still useful for throwing junk in, and flip the back of it down and you’ve got a massive trunk (even by not-coupe standards).

Whoa! Slowcarfast is definitely a good thing. Honestly, I might go that way with my next daily, and keep the M2 to get the rush when I want/need it. The 86 is definitely on my short list (despite the kids - they can sit cross-legged, right?).

Honestly I haven’t had issues with it (yet). It certainly won’t pass someone up as easily as say a WRX or something like that, but it isn’t unbearable.

Though with that said, it’d be perfect with another 75-100 hp IMO.
