VW does that shit, too. Little black covers that require a special tool to remove.

I only removed them once. Visible lug bolts/nuts are a thing of beauty.

Well if it’s any consolation, if it was a Subaru you’d be looking at a broken wheelstud not a bent tire iron right now.

Though I guess the wheel would be off...

I’ve had to replace them all once, and now a single one because the tyre guy thinks full on air ratchet is the correct torque. Had to drill the stud out.

And Ford.... we’re talking about the chrome metal caps press fit to the lug nuts that always swell and then get mashed when you try to take them off because they’re in-between sizes, right?

I specifically bought special lug nut sockets from the Snap-On guy to deal with Dodge/Chrysler and GM chrome capped lugnuts.

They’re 18.5mm, 19.5mm, 21mm, 21.5mm, 22mm, and 22.5mm.

Yes, exactly those... which are useless! if you get a flat in the highway the head can’t get in.

The nut is literally too big and swollen!

I suspect he did have a torque wrench, but read the requirments in NM and the torque wrench was calibrated in lbft!

DAMN YOU IMPERIAL UNITS!

I bought a 3/4" drive, extendable to 24" ratchet on Amazon a little while back for something like $25 US. It is very handy for breaking stubborn lug nuts free. I’ve also started using a torque wrench when I put them on. I know that if I ever take it to a mechanic it will probably get the air gun, but at least when I do them I know I’ll be able to get them free later.

Well, getting shit from amazon here is way more complex! I think i’ll go to Walmart or something and look for something useful.

More than anything I can’t diagnose myself anyway, so trying to take the nuts out anyway is futile.

Yeah I meant to say that you should be able to find something similar at a similar price - I figure getting things from Amazon would be either a pain or not possible. I think I missed part of the story here - are they just on too tight, or are they swollen to the point you can’t even get the wrench on there properly?

The car had been parked for the better part of two days, so they aren’t swollen. They get swollen in the highway and when its out, then its a pain to remove them!

I’ll get a better wrench (Read: longer) with a torque meter

12/20/2017 at 01:18, STARS: 0

Gotcha. It is better to get two wrenches if you can afford it and have space to store them - one with a torque meter and one without. You can knock the meter out of calibration by using it to break loose stuck nuts. You can go cheap on the non-meter one if you like. There are non-ratcheting breaker bars that are essentially just a 3/4” drive head pinned onto a long steel pole made just for getting nuts loose. You can get them up to a meter long. On the torque wrench side you want something that’ll go up to around 120 ft-lb (160 Nm) for lug nuts. I don’t know if they are available in Mexico, but I have a Tekton that was reasonably priced and I am happy with.

12/20/2017 at 01:38, STARS: 1

Well, I mean, we make the lug nuts so we better have wrenches!

My car’s manual specifies 120nm... so yeah, I need a high capacity meter!

Had to buy a 4ft breaker bar once because some monkey with an air-tool torqued the lugs so tight the rotors were warped and squeaking.

Although the breaker bar has come in handy since then.

rotors... sqeaking

I think I found the issue!

Kinja'd!!! "TorqueToYield" (torquetoyield)
12/20/2017 at 12:31, STARS: 0

It might not be something most people immediately think of. I thought I needed new break pads maybe or there was a rock chip caught between the brakes or something. Went to take off the wheel just to have a better look - the lug nuts were insanely tight. When I put them back on at a normal torque the squeak was gone. It’s a common problem with over tightened lug nuts though.

12/20/2017 at 12:33, STARS: 0

Oh god.

I’ll check that out, but I don’t have a torque meter... If I go to a dealer and have them check it would it be insanely expensive?

Kinja'd!!! "TorqueToYield" (torquetoyield)
12/20/2017 at 12:38, STARS: 0

You don’t really need a torque wrench for lug nuts. Using a stock lug nut wrench (not a huge breaker bar) at a good amount of force is close enough. I’ve used that method forever with no ill effects. It’s not rocket science, you just don’t want to use an air impact driver that will way over torque it.

I stood on the edge of the tire iron and I must have produced about 900nm of torque on the lug and it did not even move...
