Kinja'd!!!

Featuring fresh squeezed orange juice! Time to get back to it, oppo. My knee injury has been more mental than physical. There’s absolutely no reason I should have stopped working out entirely, and eating junk 24/7.

Anyways, here’s the preworkout I like.

5g creatine. Cheap as shit, none of that fancy “tri-malate creatine blend insert-buzzword-here”. One of the few supplements with a ton of research behind it, and no conclusive negative side affects. POSSIBLY more acne if water intake isn’t increased, but even that is far from a sure thing.

200mg caffeine. I’ve never drank coffee, ever. That said... After a year of caffeine pills I’m hooked. No longer used for working out, taken in the morning before work. At first I was so much more efficient with the boost, now I’m practically useless if I DON’T have any caffeine haha. I’ll be taking a week off to get my “normal functioning level” back to zero caffeine needed. Then probably just use caffeine for busting through plateaus in the gym.

BCCA’s. 4 grams for better recovery. I tried using beta alenine as well but it made me crash hard after workouts, and was rough on my digestive track. Nope nope nope.

L-Citrulline DL-Malate 2:1. I don’t even remember why I added this, or how I decided on the serving size I use, but I trust my past self’s research enough to just go with it. Which is how I approach a lot of things! Can’t remember everything.

Strength, flexibility, and balance in equal measure. That’s the goal! And no more f*cking injuries.... What do you all do to stay in shape/stay sane/eat whatever you like without guilt, etc.?

Creatine is really good at forcing muscle bulk, but a lot of it is water weight. It was my first magical, safe supplement back in the 90s. And man, my cardio suffered! But if you’re on a strength-oriented program, you can’t beat it.

Arginine and citrulline are vasodilators. They make you more veiny and increase your pump. Whether they help performance is debatable. They can also give you hemorrhoids.

My supplements at the moment are:

Pre-workout: 1.5 g creatine HCl, 5 g beta alanine

Post-workout: 5 g glutamine, 1.5 g glucosamine+1 g MSM (joint supplement), 1 g 2:1:1 BCAA, 1 multivitamin

I mainly alpine and nordic ski in the winter and ride bikes in the summer. For diet I eat food, pretty much any food I’m not picky. I don’t do suplements except for hydration drinks like Cytosport Cytomax and Hammer electrolyte tablets for longer endurance rids.

I go for nothing before, but drink a Fairlife chocolate milk afterwards. It’s delicious.

Any multi-vitamin recommendations? I’ve got fish oil and vitamin D but it’s been years since I’ve taken an all-in-one

I used to take dental dry mouth lozenges for long mountain biking trips in the heat. Worked wonders.

What is alpine and Nordic skiing?

I have this bigass bottle of Costco vitamins because it was big and cheap. It’s going to take me a long time to finish it. Generally I stay away from weird workout supplement concoctions and prefer to pick & choose my ingredients, because those workout concoctions have a bunch of extra shit in them that may be of questionable value and they’re expensive. But I figure any regular old cheap multivitamin covers the bases and I don’t have to think about it.

Really the big thing for me is the joint supplement. I’m 35 and I live in Wisconsin. The cold dry air is terrible on joints as you start to age, especially with regular lifting. Last winter my joints were getting clicky and crunchy as fuck. I went on my honeymoon in March and with the nice tropical air it was like, ahhhh my joints feel fine again. And they went back to cracking and crunching as soon as I came home.

I started on the joint stuff after my joints had already gone all crackly so they didn’t really recover until the weather warmed back up. It’s still early going this winter but I hope since I’ve added it to my daily supplements that I won’t be all crunchy this winter.

Back before I took no exercise and ate like I hated my body, I used to do protein + banana (or other fruit) + milk (or juice)+ a TON of fiber as my post-workout shake. Only about 300 calories and seemed to work. Only downside is you need to know where you’ll be when that fiber comes back to say hello.
