Kinja'd!!!

The Tacoma X Runner was based on the 2nd gen Tacoma. Produced from ‘05-’13 (though it was still sold in Canada for 2014 and Hawaii for ‘14 and ‘15) it was Toyota’s attempt at a sport truck. Think of it as a Japanese F-150 Lightning, except smaller, not as brash, and more sports car like.

Kinja'd!!!

Powered by Toyota’s 4.0 V6, it produced 236 hp and 266 ft-lb of torque all routed to the rear wheels through a proper 6 speed manual. 0-60 came in an ok 7 seconds, but apparently it pulled 0.90 g on the skidpad, which is impressive for a truck. A TRD Supercharger was an option that was said to boost horsepower to 300.

Kinja'd!!!

What made an X Runner different from a basic Access Cab work truck Tacoma? Well Toyota gave it an X Brace to stiffen the rear, ride height was lowered 1 inch, it rode on 18' wheels with 45 series tires, it received stiffer springs, Bilstein shocks, larger anti-roll bars, and a standard limited-slip differential. Fog lights, a ground effects kit along with the fake ass hood scoop that was so popular on Tacoma’s and 4 Runners last decade rounded out the visual aspect of it.

Kinja'd!!!

Inside,it was pretty standard Tacoma fare. No sport seats or faux carbon fiber here. Just good ole plain vanilla Toyota that’s basic as hell but you appreciate it because you know it will always work.

So where did these things go? You’d think you would see more running around or tuned, but I haven’t at least. I’ve seen some people want one for towing. Something fun to drive that wasn’t a basic painters truck. And in typical Tacoma fashion, they still hold their value. If the 7 I found for sale near me, all were right under or just a little over 15 grand. And this is with 80 thousand+ miles on them. That’s if you can find one though. Apparently Toyota didn’t make many. And some digging around some forums found that many people have never even seen one on the road.

Its too bad though that it went away. As gas has gotten cheaper, the industry seems to have moved away from road based sport trucks to more off road orientated vehicles. So if you can find one, pick one up. I doubt we will ever see a sport truck like it again

You forgot to mention the thing you MUST mention when talking about the X-Runner: They benchmarked the 350z for driving performance. Now thats not to say the rumor that it beat a 350Z around a track is true at all, but they actually benchmarked it against a sportscar, not a sports truck.

I forgot about that. Yea I remember when I was in high school when this thing debuted and seeing that, I thought they were crazy, until I saw that it pulled damn near a 1 g on the skidpad and that it was a truck.

My coworker has an X-Runner and it’s spotless. He’s put some aftermarket wheels on it and some other small mods.

I would definitely drive one. I have always wondered if there is still aftermarket or TRD support for them.

I considered one for a split second when I was looking for a Lightning. I couldn’t find one that wasn’t beat up, had under 150k miles or unmolested for under $15k.

Yea you have to look hard for decent ones. I only found 7 near me like I said, and thats after excluding 2 for frame damage and accidents. Of those 7 2 of them had shitty Autozone looking mods. The others were all over 90 thousand miles and were still 15-16 grand.

Ah, the X-Runner, I really did like the look of those. Only seen one around my town, one of the sons of the owner of the local Toyota dealer in town here owned it for several years. Had the nice blue paint job to boot. Sold it off a few years back I think, if not its still sitting in their used lot with some good cosmetic rust spots on the box, waiting for someone to finally buy her and fix ‘er up or run ‘em into the ground.

H3T Alpha. I’ve only seen 2 for sale that I can remember, both at the same time and both listed for $30k+. This was last year so Hummer was already dead and buried for quite a while.

Both were gone almost immediately.

These hold their value. I’ve never seen one for sale cheaper than 18 grand. I saw one the other day that the dealer wanted 28 grand for with 70 thousand miles. The only thing these had going for them was the fact that the bed was actually usable, unlike the H2T

Came here for ZQ8 content. It should be mentioned, though, that the ZQ8 and 5.3 were not required together at all. And a better comparison might actually be the 5banger with 5 speed manual. The ZQ8 also dates back to the S-Series, and I think it was the underpinnings for the Xtreme trucks.

I remember reading an article when the Colorados were new, and the target for the ZQ8 was the V6 Mustang. They mused, that that was not a difficult target to hit, and the truck probably nailed it. Times seem to have changed some.

This is correct. However since the topic was a supercharged 300hp engine I felt the V8 was the best match

Supercharger wasn’t standard for the Toyota, it was a TRD extra. I like manuals more, so I would put the 220hp Colorado (or the 242hp 3.7L, because I think the ZQ8/manual/5cyl was still available) vs the 236hp Tacoma. But to compare the more powerful versions, you are correct.
