It was more like 3 or 4 movies. Luke + Rey, Finn + Rose, Poe + The Chase, and then Hoth Pt. 2: It’s definitely salt, not snow.

Man the nerd herd gave me a lot of shit for complaining that Hoth part deux looked like Hoth. It does, the whole time I was like, is that the base on Hoth? They told me, “It’s salt you fucking idiot, not snow, totally different stakes in this film!” uh ok, I’m in a theater so it just looks all white, and they have a trench and goggles and stuff, looking at walkers advancing on them, oh they are also guarding a base with shield doors, yeah it’s not like hoth...

My first thought in the theater was Great, “The Force Awakens” followed the beats and plot of “A New Hope,” now we get to watch this movie emulate the escape from Hoth and Luke training on Dagobah...
I thought it was certainly funny, and I liked Luke’s character more than in the original trilogy, but the movie had pacing issues and like five deus ex machina moments. Mixed bag.

I would love to learn more about how this movie was made beyond what I’m sure we’ll see.
I feel like there were moments that Rian Johnson was fully responsible for (mirror-world Rey, for example), but many that were the result of the studio saying the movie had to have certain things. It definitely tried to be a rehash of Empire, and it’s almost like the whole salt planet thing was because someone at the studio said “do a thing like Hoth”. Hence the joke where the guy tastes it and says “it’s salt”.

Well supposedly Kathleen Kennedy and some other guy had to OK everything and I’m sure they had their points.
