These days he might be most known because of his nephew Patrick Carney of the Black Keys but he had a successful career in its own right. Ralph was known locally for his being a member in the Ohio band Tin Huey for years. He also played with the B-52's, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello,Jonathan Richman, They Might Be Giants, Hole, St. Vincent, The Black Keys and others over his lifetime. When I moved to the Akron area 30+ years ago I only knew of a few Ohio origin rockers or bands like Pure Prairie League, Chrissie Hynde, Devo , Joe Walsh, The Waitresses and Michael Stanley. In the year after my arrival I came upon the Numbers Band which Chrissie Hynde’s brother played in and Tin Huey, both exceptional for the type of music they play but never getting the credit they were due. Sadly another band mate has been lost that never received enough recognition. Some of Tin Huey’s music has been available for downloads across the web , maybe 3-4 albums and EPs plus some singles. They did some covers but had some really good original creations which I hope some of you guys that like obscure tunes will discover on YouTube and other sites. If you are a Netflix fan you should note that in 2014 he and nephew Patrick Carney came up with the theme song for BoJack Horseman.

There are so many fantastic musicians whose name we never know. Sounds like a great career. RIP.

It was real fun for me when The Black Keys started on our local scene and weren’t known nationally yet. I already knew of the Carney name and turned all the guys at work onto The Black Keys. I frequently blasted their music in the parts department and a few coworkers have said that was the first place they heard them, well before the TV commercial for Nissan in 2004. Its been great that they have gone on to such fame and a family legacy of good music has carried on. RIP Ralph.

Hello Dave, how are you doing? Happy New Year. I haven’t seen much of you around here lately.

I have a challenge question for you: can you find the GM color code for the white paint that would have been on a dog dish-style rim in 1971?

You must not have seen where I posted I’m no longer a GM guy after 30+ years. Started at a Hyundai dealership a bit over two weeks ago. Its challenging. Different catalogs and computer software to learn. Next month we start with a web sales system where we will get direct parts orders from the net. We’ve got a huge wholesale base with about 40 bodyshops buying from us. The snow storms from the last two weeks has us going strong. It was a lateral move with same base pay. First commission check in a couple weeks should be nice with all the body parts we’ve sold.

I searched the web a bit and most GM 69-72 era vans and trucks had the wheels , roof , gate letters and some other white accents painted in Ditzer-PPG 2185 which is GM WA5111 in the new paint coding but was #521 back in the day.

I did not see that bit of news. Congratulations. I do remember that the things hadn’t been great for you in the old job. Was there a commission at the old place as well?

I’d say you are fortunate to have an opportunity to reinvent your game at a time when most men are aged out of opportunity. Certainly that is the case for me.

Thank you for the paint code. I searched myself but couldn’t have any confidence in what I found. Thank you for all of the GM help. It was huge.

Will you wind up driving a Hyundai automobile?

I’ve always been of the opinion that Korea builds a decent automobile.

Yes I’ve been on base and commission for 30 years. It was nice to hear when I was hired that I had an awesome reputation and that people knew me across much of the Akron and Cleveland are. The people at the Hyundai shop are fantastic and enjoy their job. Its a completely different work environment than at a Chevy shop.

I might still be able to help you with GM stuff because of my web skills. Guys at my old job used to wonder if I’d ever been a hacker. Somebody would need a phone number or address for a customer that wasn’t in our computer and I would hit the web. Sometimes I’d come up with all that info and voter info, what they paid for their home, other people in the residence, utility bill etc in under 10 minutes. I have a knack for searches.

As for buying a Hyundai , it could happen if we replace my wifes Ford Edge at some point. My quattro is only 45k miles and I drive about 8k miles a year so I’ll keep it until I retire in ~5 yrs and maybe much longer.

That’s nice to hear. I passed through a VERY rough patch last year and landed at a new school that is all fresh air. It’s about unions and how they can poison a workplace and perish the thought that you would fall on the wrong side of one of the union’s conflicts of interest and woe be unto you if you have the temerity to complain about it when you do. Despicable, unions are. Are they not all bad? Perhaps. But the good ones will never speak out about the bad ones. Yuck.

I search the web for some of my GM stuff, but I am not always successful.

Teacher workday today: no kids.
