So recently, I’ve been wrapping up my work on this 8-part video series I did on my travels through China. It’s taken me two years to finally get it all done and squared away, and it’s almost a little sad.

It’s like... now that I’m done editing, the trip is now truly over. I’ve finished telling this great story, and now I guess I have to go find another. That said, I can’t wait.

I wonder if it’s the same with project cars. You pick up the car, rough around the edges, bursting with excitement about what it could be. Over time, there’s trials and tribulations... and for many people, the project is “never done”. And yet, for so many others, the project is completed, only to be sold in short order and the next one begun!

We truly are complicated people.

P.S. If you’re ever in China, scope the dope vintage VW Santanas before they’re all off the road. I’d fucking LOVE to bring one of these back to Australia and daily it for a while but that’ll never, ever happen.

If you want a RHD model, VW did sell the Santana in Japan through Nissan dealers. Maybe you can find a “Nissan” Santana and import to Australia

Trying to import a LHD, Chinese market car from 30 years ago would be impossibly difficult, if there were even any in decent condition left by the time I have the pile of riches to do so. :(

It’s kinda like a fun fantasy rather than anything I can see happening. I’d love to score a HK taxi, too.

Good data! Something I’ll have to think about if I’m ever rich enough to do such things.

I’m working on importing a Russian-market car from 50+ years ago. Is Australia harder to get cars into than America?

I’d say easier in some respects, harder than others.

We don’t have the oppressive 25 year rule or the Chicken Tax, for example, but we have a bunch of other stuff that gets in the way.

I imagine safety standards would preclude me importing a Chinese Santana but who’s to say?

I’d love to get my hands on a classic Chinese car, but the sort of one I would want to own is rare enough that it would be quite expensive. I’m not just talking about Obvious things like the Hongqi CA770

(best I found was one for $50,000USD)

But more interesting cheaper cars.
(like a nice Shanghai SH7221 or SH760)

Actually, I had immense trouble finding any cars over 25 for sale at all.
Do you know where to search for such things? most Chinese car sites refused to show anything below 1995 that I found.

I love that SJ7221, like a Chinese Escort or something.

I honestly don’t know where you’d search. I think the best way would be to make friends with a Chinese enthusiast if you were serious about getting your hands on this kind of metal. They’d be able to help you navigate the scene and any relevant websites. I’ve had a hell of a time just trying to upload videos to Youku (Chinese equivalent of Youtube), I can’t imagine trying to actually buy a car over there.

Thing about that SH7221...that’s a 1990 model. and it uses lights, bumpers, and a few other parts from the Santana. Take a look.
