UPDATE: seller says price is firm and cash only. From what everyone is saying, I’ll try to meet at a police station and near a bank.

After a break for some family stuff that took precedence, the hunt for an Integra for my sister is back on. My dad is going to come down and drive it back up if I find a good one. Here is a good candidate in my area. If I can find someone who drives stick to come with me, I can look it over. Any Opponauts in the Dallas area available to help?

I’ve never bought a car under these circumstances before. Do people just show up with $3k in cash? Should I ask to meet at a public location?

I would not bring money with you. If scheduling allows, you can buy it at your bank, which will allow you to take out the money then and there, in a fairly secure, high-surveillance environment. They may also have a notary for the title transfer, though that’s not necessary in most places. Failing that, meet at a police station to do the sale, but just get the money right before hand, don’t carry it with you when you go to check out the car. Not worth the risk.

Great ideas. Also, I have a friend who is a police corporal. I wonder if he drives stick.

Meet at a police station to check out the car. If you want to buy the car, go from there to a bank where you have the bank issue them a cashier’s check.

Yeah its fine to pay cash for that amount, but I would make sure to meet the seller in person without cash first. Just good security for anything more than like $100 on craigslist. Its always good to check a car out first, agree on a price, and then come back later once you have taken a chance to think about it for a bit. That way you dont just impulse buy a turd lol.

I bought my Miata without having any idea how to drive a manual. It was an uhh interesting 2 hour drive home! My only real problem was I kept putting it into 5th instead of 3rd and so it was just really slow. But as long as you can get the whole first gear thing then you are unlikely to actually harm the car while driving it.

My only problem is I need someone to come with me to test drive and drive the car home. I am physically unable to drive the car. Since I need someone to come with me, I’ll probably try to do the initial inspection and purchase in one trip. That means if I’m not feeling it 100% on the first visit, I’m likely to bail.

Been too long since I’ve done this to be of any use (and live too far away), but the car looks nice - FACW/WWD/TSP gave good advice, good luck and keep us posted!

I haven’t been following your search, if you’ve been posting, but...that’s a pretty good deal IMO. I’d say jump on it. A nice interior detailing and lose that old tint job? NP.

Thanks. I thought originally that I could get decent ones for sub-$3k, but I’m finding that’s not so. I’ll probably jump on it if it checks out.

Tell ‘em you were gonna offer $2750 and that you know they’d probably say no..and then they’d come at you with something else like $3100, so let’s just settle on $2900 so you “feel like you got a good deal”. They laugh at the absurdity of your candor, say okay, shake hands. Boom.

EDIT - Reading your update. Who knows. I’d still try the same thing. Good luck.

Ahh makes sense. I was just in Dallas, not a place I would want to learn to drive stick anyways haha. Traffic and the crazy spaghetti highway systems seemed a little much to handle at the same time. While potentially a biased judgement, you could have the owner drive the car with you in the passenger seat. It at least can show glaring issues most likely.

You are right. I would then have to have him or someone bring the car to my house. I’ll figure something out.

Dallas stick-driving oppo here: this week is terrible for me from a work perspective, but I would love to come lend a hand if you need it and I can make it work!

Fantastic! I’m texting my neighbors to see if any of them can help so I don’t have to impose on your schedule. If they can’t do it easily, I’ll take advantage of your kindness. The guy works in Las Colinas and lives in Coppell.

Those are both super easy for me. Tuesday is my only definite no-go as I’ll be out of town for the day, but after that I think my availability is much better.

Cool. Our College closes down for the holidays Wednesday, but that means nothing to me. I’m working to deadlines, not punching a clock. That leaves me flexible too.

Car been stolen 3 times... by me. Drives good, worn the tires out some more. :P

A joke on how easy an integra can be stolen.

Hey, why is that a meme anyway? What makes these things particularly steal-able?

I read that you can open the hood by reaching under the front bumper and somehow open the doors and start it. IDK how true that is.

So it looks like none of my neighbors are up for going out there in the daylight hours. Do you think you could manage it this week? It’s not the best time of year for this, but I leave town for a week next Tuesday, and who knows if this thing will still be there when I return.

I’m supposed to be on PTO Thursday and Friday; right now those are both up in the air due to pending client deadlines, but if I don’t wind up in the office I’m in.

Shoot me an e-mail to bradleysparker AT gmail DOT com and we can coordinate schedules

Cool. We’ll see what we can make happen. I’m of the mind that if it gets stupid difficult to arrange, there will always be other cars, but we’ll try.
