huh.... that thing derailed bloody wierdly... looks like the front of the train stopped and the rest split either way..

think i heard track obstruction... so i guess the front stopping is exactly what happened... (thats about all i heard tho as my living room is a fucking warzone right now with kids trying to outnoise eachother on xbox and tablets.......)

There are engines front and rear, the front engine is down on the highway, looks like it left the tracks and continued through the woods and onto the highway. The rear engine and one car stayed on the tracks more or less.

It looks like the train just went straight...

The divots in the ground make it look like it jumped right then the ripple effect shot those 3 or 4 cars off to the left and onto the highway.

That Tundra(?) and Soul... whoa. Yikes. And the rail cars... that looks really quite terrifying. The aerial view gives a much fuller picture of what the scene really looks like. And it’s even scarier, and appears much more fortunate to have the numbers that have been reported.

Same thought ran through my head... there were reports that it was travelling 81mph, and that seems WAY too fast for that curve.

It’s a dedicated high speed rail line that has been test over the past few weeks including just last week. Today was its first official day of service.

Speed limit 79, train was traveling 81. Hardly speeding.

Now about the corner... Is this even a sharp corner for a train?

Kinja'd!!!

(sigh) they just said this was new infrastructure.. It’s a NEW ROUTE, not new tracks. [ MAP ]

Edit - correction. That’s the wrong bridge. This one is a lot sharper. My map link was correct, but I screenshotted a southern bridge.

It’s not really sharp, provided the superelevation is correct for the intended speeds. It’s a bit “kinky” though, but I guess they couldn’t increase the radius due to the pond(?).

This is where it occured , red line is the path the train took, blue is what it was supposed to

.

Kinja'd!!!

2MPH isn’t much of a difference, and given a 79MPH limit I’m sure they build in a bit of a buffer to that. I guess we’ll have to wait for the NTSB to find out what happened.

I’m not sure if you saw my edit or not, but I corrected the location of the bridge, but this image your provided has confused the shit out of me.

The train made it partially over the bridge. How could it possibly have taken the red line? Was the train not heading north?

It’s alleged that the curve had a 30 mph limit.

The train was heading south, the oppo of your arrows. The front engine and majority of the cars went straight off the tracks (heading to the left in the pic), while the rear few cars and rear engine stayed on the tracks/bridge. Mostly.

Oh shit. I saw the engine and thought that was the FRONT of the train.

Then there was one on the back, too - and that’s what confused me about the direction of the train.

I was under the impression that it was traveling left to right (north) and it derailed as it approached the bridge, sending car three and beyond off the rails.

Kinja'd!!!

I didn’t see these photos until now. Yikes.

I did as well, until they finally got some aerial views. Damn pusher-puller caboose-less trains, making things confusing, rabble rabble rabble.

The thing that made this crash so bad was the pusher engine at the rear. The front engine goes off and drags a car with it and then the rear pusher engine keeps shoving cars forward down the track. Pusher engines should be banned, they’re too dangerous!
