For thanksgiving, we go to the inlaws. They have a tradition where they give out a lotto tickets to guests. Maybe you win maybe you don’t whatever. Usually at the end of the scratching, someone will say just take it to a store. They can scan it and tell you right away if you won.

My question is... if store is selling lotto tickets, can they not scan the ticket and know which is the winning one and just... keep it to themselves?

I was wondering about that and my guess is that the ticket can only be scanned once. Any subsequent scans would be invalid so no one can cash it more than once.

Is that how it works? Anyone?

IIRC there is a screen facing the customer too so they can’t pull one over on you. There are also self serve kiosks but they never ever work.

Generally the part that you scan to see if it is winner you have to scratch off first before scanning.

The barcode to see if the lottery card is a winner is underneath the scratch-off foil. You need to fully clear off the barcode to scan it. It can be scanned multiple times, but only redeemed once.

Having said that, make sure that portion of the card wasn’t already scratched off!

(Also, most state lotteries have smartphone apps that can scan the tickets).

In Colorado when they scan the ticket, you hear a little trumpet blast when you’ve won; and most lottery machines have a second screen facing the customer. Additionally, most retailers now have a little self-scan box somewhere on the counter where you can scan a ticket yourself and see whether it is a winner.

It’s midnight and you’re bored clerking at the store. Surely, if you could, you would scan lotto tickets and keep them for yourself. Sell the losers to the masses.

I am not saying see if ticket is a winner/loser when customer is trying to buy it. Do homework beforehand.

In the MA lotto any ticket that wins over a certain amount you have to scratch off that box in the bottom and enter part of the code to cash it. If you scan three losers in a row the auto-cashing is disabled and you have to do that for every single ticket for the rest of the day.

The machine cannot just check if the ticket is a winner. If it won anything, once you scan it that ticket is cashed and it shows up on your sales report. You have to give out that money or else there is an overage when the lotto is audited. If the ticket was never paid for before being scanned, it shows a shortage on another line.

Lol not even close. Lotto is big business like everything else and they have their own “Big Brother” when it comes to verifying how people win. There have been people who worked for the State lotto commission who have gotten caught scheming through friends and family.

If you’re talking scratch tickets, you can’t do that in Colorado without scratching off and revealing the barcode, which would be an immediate fraud indicator. Not to mention the fact that lottery customers would see that the barcode was exposed and lose their minds.
