Is $5k for an engine that makes 460 HP and TQ; NP or CP?

I’m thinking NP.

383 shortblock for $2k. So you don’t have to worry about botching the bottom end.

Kinja'd!!!

Plus Edlebrock top end kit for $3k.

(Bottom pic is from Edlebrock’s website, top is from Jegs.)

And that’s everything you need from gaskets to bolts! Although it looks like you’d still need to get your own oil pan and pump. But still, no taking anything to a machine shop. No plasty gauge, just get the engine timing right and bolt everything on and you’re good to go!

It’s definitely not CP, but there are cheaper ways to get that power if you don’t mind junkyard engines.

You could spend more, or you could spend less. My dad chose the former and has spent a ton of money on his 350 to get the same power without stroking it.

Steep price point, but most of the work is already done, so I’d wage with NP if you want to get it done quickly.
Also: getting the timing right shouldn’t be too hard with a pushrod engine, only 2 pulleys and a small chain

Absolute Waste of Money. Buy a used 6.0 throw a cam and valve springs in it and be done with it, plus free fuel injection.

Building a small block chevy is like building a flathead ford, only build one for nostalgic reasons.

You can get a used L92 for like $2500, all aluminum, 400+hp from the factory, add a cam and make 550.

Eh...CP.

That short block probably has bargain basement parts in it.

Not to mention, a factory set of 5.3 LS heads are going have better flow characteristics than the Edelbrock heads.

Per $ can’t beat an LS motor. 5.3 makes 442/412 with only a crane cam swap.

You could just buy an LS3 and get the same power in a more reliable package.

Go to skip white racing and you can get a fully built crate sent to your house for about the same price.

If you want a drop in motor for a muscle car that’s maybe a bit nicer and clean and just needs a replacement - NP. It’ll be all new and should have minimal problems while reliably making power. If the power figure is what you want, well then it’s a solid CP since, as others have said, LS motors (and even some FOrd 5.0s and modern “hemis”) are everywhere and make plenty more oomph while also being properly modern, sorted engines.

These engines are really for two types of people:

1.) I want to make more power but still look original.

2.) I want to make more power but I don’t want to do SHIT.

Not everybody wants to do the work (if you can really call it that) to swap to a modern engine/EFI.

Other than that it’s a no brainer. Gen III+. 5.3s are like the Vortec heads of the early 2000's. So good it’s kinda pointless to do otherwise.
