Kinja'd!!!

With my internship having ended, and my stay in Canada nearing its end, I’ve finally got an idea what this adventure has cost.

So let’s play a game: guess how much this adventure has cost me, and answer by posting a car for sale for an amount of money close to your estimate. Closest estimate and/or coolest car wins.

The specifics that might help figure out the cost:

2 return flights AMS-YYZ

3.5 month stay in Toronto, Canada

4 months of rent

no tuition (payed by university)

(Mind you, these are the gross costs, as staying away from my personal finances makes the game more fun)

Which currency? (Posting a car for that price would immediately solve the currency problem :P )

Average Toronto rent at ~$1700 CAD/mo works out to about $5500 USD and I’ll add $1000 USD for food & miscellaneous expenses.

Total: $6500 USD or about $8400 CAD.

Only if he lived in a room located in a basement/dungeon and made his entire diet consist of “Mr. Noodles” and/or ‘street meat’ hotdogs.

Haha yes, I tried to live a little, so the only Noodles I had were proper restaurant ones.

Talking about better investments... (I could even have almost bought 2 of these as it cost me $9000 CAD in the end)

And, yes I have roommates

The break down is not fully right, however the total cost is very close. It came in around $9000 CAD.

Damn dude, I live in Chicago (with 3 roommates) and even if I didnt prorate its only $850 a month, only 2 blocks from the train, halfway between the airport and the office, and I get a decent salary on top of that.

Dont want to imagine paying more than that as an intern...

I paid $950 CAD a month for rent, but to be fair a lot of my costs went out to doing fun things (taking advantage of living in an unknown city) and into eating out.

(Luckily I got some pay from the university I visited, and a small grant from my home university, so I didn’t have to take the full hit)

Just like my approach to engineering then.

I’m asking this as a Canadian who lives in the country north of Toronto.

Did you enjoy your stay in Canada?

Kinja'd!!! "BvdV - The Dutch Engineer" (dutchengineer)

Yes, I did! In between working, I had quite a bit of time to explore the city, and the area around it, and I just love it! Also, I made some great friends here. I will definitely be back to visit Canada someday, as it has a special place in my hart now..

I’m so glad to hear that! It’s nice to hear when someone from another country enjoys an extended stay here!

I have a friend who’s been living in the Netherlands for the last four years and she always brags about how much she loves it. I’m hoping to get out there one day soon and explore the country!

You definitely should visit the Netherlands someday, it’s great, and the proximity of everything makes it very easy to see the whole country during your stay.
