I think this was one of the most educational episodes of Engine Masters I've seen

Apparently cylinder heads are way more important than the camshafts. Also I kind of assumed a bigger cam would make more power everywhere, but like air flow stuff, it mostly just shifts the power curve.

oh yeah, cylinder heads on a small block chevy are the biggest place for power. matched with a good set of headers and you can really get the air flowing. Proper air flow can make a small cam do wonders, but proper air flow through the heads will then basically allow you the option from going to even a bigger cam.

It’s kind of bad new though, because cylinder heads are more expensive than cams :(

Although I wonder what the results would be like on a modern engine. Since even modern cars that aren’t performance oriented probably have really good heads, because of CAD and such.

Yep. Airflow is critical. The Mustang GT didn’t go from 315 to 412 hp just from an extra 400cc displacement, it was all in the heads. Specifically the much improved exhaust gas flow.

Cams help but there’s only so much lift you can get.

well depending on what your goals, there are some good cheap options to get some great gains. For many years the 2.02 Camel humps were the top dogs for Small Block Chevy factory heads, the later Vortec heads that were stock on all later trucks/SUV’s are supposed to outflow the old camel’s, though I haven’t ran them because I prefer the older style valve cover bolt arrangement. The key is research and figuring out what your end goals for the motor are. You might be able to get away with a better factory head that just needs some minor port work to really flow.

The Vortecs are easily the cheapest bang for the buck head, especially considering the popularity of Gen III+ swaps. Like you said though, you need to get centerbolt valve covers and a special intake.

Generally speaking, lift nets power everywhere, duration shifts the curve to the right

That makes sense, they increased lift and duration and although it moved to the right, it does look like they made more power than they lost to the left. I guess because of the extra lift.

yes, though aftermarket cast iron heads are pretty cheap as well if you want a super flowing head. the 350 in my 33 ford has a set of Sportsman II’s that have been on the truck since 90 and are a great flowing head.

Did have a 400 SBC once that had a set of AFR’s on it and holy cow were those a nice set of heads.

Engine masters is possibly my favorite of the MT original shows (aside from Roadkill, of course). Worth the 5$ a month to get the new episodes ASAP.

Heads are the reason why it only makes sense to build LS motors. You get a factory head that is better than damned near any GM aftermarket SBC head for free.

Well now I know I should believe everything I hear on internet forums about making power!
