Kinja'd!!!

Jeep’s MP Compass has a nice interior, but this gem of FCA fail is too good not to share.

The steering column shroud around the Start button is hilariously unfinished.

Also, the exterior rear quarter panels on our car have a corner shaving inconsistency between the same panel on the left and right respective sides of the car.

That’s fine, but the steering column cover looks like the parts didn’t fit and somebody on the assembly line shaved it with a chainsaw.

That’s pretty bad, but a few months ago I sat in a base model (new) Dodge Journey whose materials and fitment easily beat my Honda Odyssey in almost every way. And the Journey is generally considered one of the worst around.

It’s all a media conspiracy.

I think it’s the same sensationalist crowd thinking. Someone sees a problem on an FCA car, “OMG they’re the same turds that they were in the 80s.”

Statistically, FCA still lags in reliability but cars today are just bulletproof in general compared to 20 years ago.

Why would they hide the push button in a whole like that. I get putting it in the same location as the ignition, but it should be flush

On my old Mazdaspeed 6, it had keyless start which was actually still a key cylinder. There was a plastic knob that went over the key cylinder and you twisted the knob to start it. You could remove the knob and use the backup key built into the fob if the wireless key system wasn’t working for some reason (low battery in the fob, etc.)

I really liked the Jeep renegade I had the other day, it was a trail hawk edition. I didn’t notice anything odd about it’s build quality. Looks like they just pulled the ignition switch and installed a push button start. To lazy to redesign the dash and put the button on the dash like most push button start cars.

They don’t fail catastrophically like they used to but they still fail often enough with small things and those things are often expensive. I mean sure they don’t overheat but it’s not like replacing a tpms monitor or some faulty infotainment module is cheap.

At least its one the side of the column where you won’t notice it too much every day. My company Escape has a poorly installed plastic piece at the top of the dash that’s tucked under the A-pillar trim on the driver’s side and sits on top of the pillar trim on the passenger side.

Its really distracting, like a misaligned seam in bedroom wallpaper, you can’t help but notice it every time you get in the car. Even my boss has pointed it out on a couple of occasions, and I only see him like once a month.

They clearly just took out the ignition barrel and put a button there.

Why the hell is this button on the steering column to begin with?! It’s a start/stop *button*, not even a key. Keys on the dash are not even that rare, but a button on the column is just bizarre. If you’re moving to a button (which forces you to use a column locking solenoid), you always put it in the most convenient visible location available.

This is the kind of crap that maintains everyone’s poor opinion of FCA products.

The placement doesn’t really bother me—it’s an obviously lazy legacy parts-bin solution, but it’s nothing an owner won’t adapt to.

The Renegade is cool and the shorter wheelbase means it’s probably more off-roadable than the longer Compass Trailhawk. But it definitely won’t baby as readily.

I had two adults in the back of the Renegade. It was amusing to say the least.
