Kinja'd!!!

Remote start is useless, but I love it. Because I feel like James Bond every time I turn my car on.

Additionally, some asshole decided to lay on my car as he spoke with someone and I spooked the living shit out of him when I remote started my car from the 4th floor apartment.

Useless? Not to those of us in cold climates who park outside and would rather not scrape windows in the morning.

I mean, you could also just climb into the car and wait the 5 minutes it takes for the snow/ice to melt!

In those five minutes you can set up your SatNav, make sure the engine is even hot enough to run properly in that weather and ready yourself for the task of driving!

Even living in a hotter climate, I do take some 2-3 minutes setting myself up before leaving home/uni/place where I am!

Remote start is way more useful than keyless entry and push to start. I guess in a warm climate you wouldn’t feel that way but If you saw my early morning dash to my car with wet hair trying to start it up before I leave you’d see the use.

Also, my car sounds nice on startup but I never get to hear it because I’m inside, so it would be nice to start it from behind and listen.

I can give you that, I love my jeep’s sound, even though that V8 is muffled by the exhaust!

Why sit in a freezing cold car, when you can wait a few minutes somewhere warm, and then quickly clear the car off and get moving? Do you really spend that much time figuring out where you’re going? Both my cars are too old for remote start, but if I didn’t have a garage (and heated seats) I’d be tempted to hack something up in at least one of them.

I bet with some minor exhaust mods it would sound mean. The Hemi may not be the most advanced v8 but man does it sound great.

Yes. Because I like knowing where I’m going for certain, and I am kind of OCD :P

Also, living in a huge city like Mexico City you need to use SatNavs like Waze to avoid congestion, because of the tall buildings, sometimes the SatNav takes a while to catch the signals (specially if you’re setting off from an underground garage!)

5 min ain’t enough for the canadian cold

-25c and colder is at least 5-10 min of warming up, just to defrost the windshield.

Well, if it aint broke don’t fix it!

It certainly isn’t the best V8, that’s probably taken by the LS series, but it is very reliable and can put out a heck of a sound.

But I don’t want to mod it because: it’s a six year old jeep, meaning that next year it won’t be able to get the fancy “Cero” tags and it will render it useless for me (you can’t drive daily unless you have “Doble Cero” or “Cero” emissions tags which are limited to cars younger than seven years) So we’re probably going to sell it!

Isn’t remote start limited to like 10 or 15 minutes?

Remote start beats having your keys in the ignition while the doors are locked.

Imagine your car has been parked outside your office for 9 hours on a super cold day. Now imagine the ability to turn it on a few minutes before you leave so the engine has a chance to warm up so the heat can blow warm air, and the seat heaters can take the chill out of the seats. Beautiful.

Remote start is a wonderful thing - my coworkers use it all the time to start their car from the office in below-freezing weather. Depending on the precipitation, it could get you a good head start on your commute home, especially with really shitty conditions like freezing rain.

I would think remote seat heaters would be even more useful, since it would eliminate that whole “don’t let your car idle to warm up!” thing. I can’t stand the cold start fumes

judging by the replies I did not vouch on the benefit of remote cold weather starts!

Honestly had no clue the wk2 were getting that old already. They aged really well! (Or is it a wk1 and I’m dumb?)

And that emissions tag setup sounds pretty smart. Keeps daily driver emissions down but you can still own older cars as your fun car or utility vehicle. Does this mean when used cars hit the 7 yr mark they drop a ton in value?

Five minutes? Yeah, no. SatNav? Yeah, no. Even after starting it, scraping/brushing the snow off it’s still a good while before the heater blows hot and clears the fog. Then you’re also dealing with a cold steering wheel so you have to drive with gloves on, which I hate. I say let it warm up while I’m inside drinking a nice hot cup of coffee which is why I’m having a remote start installed on Thursday.

Not really drop in value because in adjacent states the regs are leaner. You need to get your tags twice a year (primer and Segundo semestre)

It is a WK2, first year WK2 for that matter!

Well, I don’t think its smart, you can get five kinds of tags:

“00" for new cars (be it a suburban or a spark)

“0" for cars two years or older.

“1" for cars 7 years or older

“2" for cars 7 years or older with horrible emissions

“Exento” tags that are given to hybrids and electrics (be them the Tahoe hybrid or a Prius) that last for eight years.

The issue with this system is that most cars pass emissions regulations because they are lean, the real kicker is how old your car is! So its a classist regulation that forces people that perhaps don’t have good access to public transportation into buying a car every seven years. If the regulations actually inspired people into getting efficient cars and pushing the V8 trucks into being used less often then I’d be all for them!

Every Spring we have issues with smog build up because of the crazy winds that remove certain gases from the atmosphere and only carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides remain. What the government does is that it goes into full on “ contingencia hoy no circula” which means that the 0 and the 00 are regulated like the 1 and the 2. The 1 and the 2s are only allowed to run a few days of the week (like three or four out of seven). Additionally if it goes really crazy (a lot of smog) then they make public transport free and cancel school.

See, we didn’t get snow days, we got smog days!

My truck has remote start and automatic heat on seats and steering wheel. Comes on under 40 degrees. LOVE IT

Indeed. We have anti-puffing laws here but remote start is exempt. I use it judiciously :)

How dare you! Do you know how much I want remote start this time of year? 30 degree leather seats pull the heat out of you quick. It can take 15 mins before they reach body temp in the MDX, another 5 to actually feel warm. I would love to enter a luke warm car on cold winter mornings

Remote start is barbaric and puts unnecessary wear on the engine (rich fuel mixture washed the oil film off the cylinder walls). In the civilised world, people use auxiliary heaters that can be started via a set time, a remote, or through phone apps. Can be retrofitted or ordered as a factory option on most cars. Yet, nobody in the US of A seems to have heard of them.

My Oem is 5 min, but my wife’s is 10 min.

That’s why you start it again.

When it’s -35 -40 it takes a good 20-30 drive before my electronics start working.
