Lower and remove wheel arch cladding from all the things.

Edited because the Sportwagen is available with AWD and a manual. Fun fact: people still don’t care.

If that drivetrain was available in the regular Golf, I would have had a very hard time choosing between it and my WRX when I bought it.

The extra ground clearance is nice in snow, & for lite off roading.

After driving the work Sonic through Saskatoon’s ruts and potholes, I am 100% down for lifted wagons.

I would have replaced my sportwagen with the new alltrack but we moved up size class. If my wife didn’t want/need carpool capacity would would probably be driving one.

The “we” here is the like 13 people who want to and can buy a brand new AWD wagon.

Kinja'd!!! "CB" (jrcb)
12/17/2017 at 12:42, STARS: 4

I mean, the “we” never includes people who can afford it, just people who want other people to buy one and sell it used in five years.

They’re pretty expensive new.

Edit: and I can’t afford anything over a few grand anyway.

Oh God, ye’, the ‘it doesn’t have enough power’ stuff. ‘We want those European wagons, but we want a large engine’, because dear God the rest of world can live and has lived with cars averaging 100-150bhp, but many in the U.S. ‘don’t feel safer’ on their commute to work with less than 200bhp, even though most of the time they are in stop start traffic. *AAAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

EDITED: I got a little ‘ranty’ after this point so deleted it so I don’t have to put on my flame suit.

Part of the problem is if you want both awd and decent equipment levels you’re stuck with the Alltrack. The more loaded up Sportwagen trims are fwd only.

But it fits with the overall trend of most companies in ‘Murrica only selling wagons in lifted, cladded, “this is totally a crossover you guys!” form.

The Sportwagen is available with AWD in all trim levels in Canada.

That’s exactly it for me.. those are actually great looking, capable rigs - but I don’t want my power train to start throwing codes at 35,000... Honestly, it’s why I don’t have a GTI...

I felt like I was being a dipshit when I read it back, if I continued with what I wanted to type along the lines it’s like trying to get a child to eat their fish fingers but they won’t because they are battered fish fingers and not breadcrumb fish fingers. Then I would of been full arsehole.

Put the 2.0t in it and we’ll talk. The last Jetta Sportwagen at least had that option.

This thing is so small and expensive, you might as well get a GTI and a roof box. Or a lightly used Golf R.

I was not particularly impressed and the DSG was almost as slow as my 20-y-o Tiptronic. Maybe it was in some kind of comfort setting.

The Atlas is too big and fugly, this is too small for most families, but the new Tiguan might do the trick.

Really the Euro Passat is the right answer, but I’m 4,000 miles away.

$24,650 for an AWD S model with a manual. That doesn’t seem like a bad deal to me. I saw a sharp dark blue one this morning

I’m actually very seriously looking at one of these in a year or two, I start a new job selling VWs the day after Christmas, so hopefully it goes well and I make decent money and get a sweet discount. The manuals are incredibly rare though. While I generally prefer the normal wagon styling to the “rugged” version in say the v90, I actually prefer the alltrack to the sportwagen. The cladding and chrome breaks up the side a little and I like the grill a lot more, and I want that panoramic roof with my manual. I just hope they still offer the manual by the time I can afford one.

Speaking as someone who lives with 74 WHP (wishful horsepower) it kinda sucks to be cut off all the time by turbo 4 crossovers and lose drags to dump trucks. I understand why a buyer doesn’t want to deal with that, even if the ‘safety’ excuse is bullshit.

At least here in the Portland area I’ve seen quite a few Alltracks driving around, and what seem to be some really good deals on dealer websites. I’m sure they’re trying to go on the offensive against the local Subaru strongholds. You can’t throw a stone without hitting a dozen crosstreks and outbacks out here.

Punches in right between the two, better power, nicer amenities, for a better price – I guess you’re gambling with (relative) reliability and resale values for a bit more oomph and nicer creature comforts.
