Kinja'd!!!

Well, Sister CB (the eldest one) drove through a whiteout near Port Severn and spun out her 6, and insurance has decided the $8k in repairs makes it a write-off. So, any recommendations for something reliable under $8k CAD? She needs something that can survive repeated four hour drives, be good in snow, have decent fuel economy, and be cheap to maintain? She wants another 6 hatchback, but she’s having difficulty finding automatics she likes without a ton of kilometres. Any help is greatly appreciated!

A Camry would probably do the trick

01-05 Hyundai Elantra, the one I had had plenty of power, the automatic tranny wasn’nt ditsy, every part on it was cheap to replace, the only downside is needing timing belts every 60k.(its not a particularly hard one to do). I drove it in the snow and it seemed fine until it got to a hill but that had more to do with bald lower profile tires.

Can you get a reliable Subaru for 8k?

I was thinking a Legacy, but with less than 200k kilometres they approach the upper end of the spectrum very quickly.

Why not another 6? Or an Acura of some sort, or an Accord. V6 coupes available if she wants a manual. Or get a Saab and take the chance of a lifetime!

You guys get the Micra up there! Get one of those

Remember, even Miatas and Mustangs are good in snow with winter tires, which are more popular up there.

Wait, you said it’s hard to find a 6 hatchback with an automatic? Meaning, most are manual? Because I’d totally go up there and get one since they seem to be a bit harder to find down here! :p

I was behind some kind of camary today on the highway, thought “Damn, that seems about right for an average car, And looks decent too. Would daily”

Married with children, so no Camary for me. Actually I have cars that work. So no payments needed.

Glad your sister’s OK. Good of the 6 to sacrifice itself for her safety. What happened? And will they let you part it out before taking it away?

All of the following have AWD and can be found in your listed range, depending on year & equipment, and get good fuel economy.

Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute. They also came in hybrid versions.

Ford Freestyle/Taurus X. Also the sedan versions of the same, the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego, and later the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.

Mazda CX-7 with the 2.5L I4.

Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX.

Toyota RAV4, Venza, older Highlander (before they got friggin’ massive).

Hyundai Tucson, Veracruz (a bit big but cheap), Santa Fe.

Kia Sportage & Sorento.

Suzuki Kizashi and SX4.

Honda CR-V.

There may be more but these all came readily to mind.

No. You’d need about 5-10 times that amount. Maybe more.

Early non-turbo Imprezas can be had for 6-7k with 140ish kms.

I’m consistently susrprised at how much Crown Vic $5000 buys you. Or, any early-mid ‘aughts Panther... Grand Marquis, Towncar. Less than 100k miles, and often one-owner that have been well cared for. The proverbial “drove it to church and the grocery store” car.

Now, I realize it’s rwd. And, not brilliant on fuel. But I daily a Mazda6 wagon, and it’s within a mpg of me currently.

And, you’d have MORE than enough cash leftover for maintenance and a set of Blizzaks on steelies for winter capability.

I think she could make a fair objection on looks alone. If she laughs you out of the room when you bring it up, probably not worth pursuing. I admit I’m partial to them based on history and respect for the design. I don’t find them attractive on their own merits.

Are Panthers as easy to find up there as they are on this side?

Your welcome! It should be a safe and reliable recommendation for her and can be had with a 4 or 6 cylinder engine depending on how much you want to spend (in total and on fuel). They sell a lot of them for a good reason. I’ve got a 2005 Corolla which is still rock solid at 148,000 miles.

Since Kizashis were brought up yesterday, you could get one for around $8k with the CVT and AWD. It’s not a Nissan CVT, so it should be decent.
