There’s an argument that white people look the same to them too. Because we’re trained from birth to be able to tell the people around us apart, which is less useful for difference races with different faces.

Actually I think maybe this is an American thing. Our law is 18 rather than 21, it’s probably easier to tell an under-18 than it is an under-21. The guideline for retailers is to ask for ID if the buyer looks under 25.

Most of our establishments say “if you appear under 40” on their signs. So it can get offensive when you don’t get asked...
Also, we have a lot of undercover agents who can levy huge fines on stores. People can lose their jobs over it, but that’s rare.
Usually it depends on the age and experience of the clerk.
