The more I hear about how good the Type-R is

The angrier I get about how they over did the styling. Honda could’ve won back a lot of respect from car enthusiasts, but because of the styling it’s just a meme :(

Chris Harris even straight up said it’s better than the RS! And automotive journalists were blowing their load to that for what felt like a full year.

I bet the people who own them don’t care.

I went to a dealer holding a Type-R and spoke directly to the dealer owner about it. And called him out several times on his outlandish claims of top speed and horsepower, he thought it was 500hp and 200mph! I went and told him basic numbers and specs on it and he was blown away. After some more enthusiast talk (done only by me) he said we can get a free rotation, oil change and wash. Not bad.

True, it is a low production car so not many people have to like the styling for it to sell well. I just hope in the future they come out with a toned down one. Especially since it’s nearly the same motor they’re putting in the Accord they’ll probably be able to make a lot of them if they demand is there.

Which would mean I’d have a much better chance of getting one for $10k in 15 years :)

I think I like how ridiculous the Type-R looks. If you want a sedate looking super hatch buy a Golf R or even a FoRS. I do agree though that the interior is dumb.

Meh. Subaru spent over a decade making ugly hot hatches and they’re all well-loved despite that. Better an ugly giant-slayer of a performance car than a decent looking vehicle with the driving dynamics of a Camry right?

They don’t. From what I’ve seen it’s mostly 20-something guys with military or tech money that own them.

I want Mugen to make a RR version just so I can see whether they make it even more insane or actually more subdued. The FD2RR got the aggressive look down perfect.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the styling starts to look restrained 10 years down the line. There are simply too many cars that looked tastelessly overstyled when they were new, but look pretty tame by 2017 standards:

But those people don’t buy new. And really the only reason they do it to the Civic is just because it’s so cheap and common so it’s easy to get a hold of. There’s plenty of J-bodies and and such that are modified just as bad.

True, but the Subarus weren’t nearly as bad I think. Maybe they were for their time, but mostly it was just the giant wing which is kind of a staple of the WRX. The CTR doesn’t really have any signature styling cues like that historically.

Initially that’s what I though too. They did it to separate it from the RS and Golf R. But apparently it’s good enough it can compete and do better than them mechanically speaking.

True, but that’s always been how the Type-Rs were. The only thing on the outside that let you know it was a Type-R was the red badging.

i THINK, that a lot of it owes to purpose.

Kinja'd!!!

when i think of honda, i think of basic transportation, that is MOSTLY reliable for getting you from one spot to another, CHEAPLY. most of those mid 90s cars got near 40 mpg, remember the insight? it got near 60 miles to the gallon....... but it was the shapeless jellybean, but it was purpose built shapelessness. and THAT is how i think of honda. basic boring mileage transportation, and a lot of other people think of them that way too. and the best way for a company to distance itself from that kind of an image, is to DRASTICALLY restyle the thing....... and its pretty drastic.

honda just isnt someone i think of when i think of going fast, or going around corners. there are much better, purpose built, tools for THAT job....... but this new civic, well seems like its got a decent shot at changing that..... might be a market for non-descript body kits, vent and scoop delete.......

I’ll admit, if Honda had released an EG hatch body with the modern type R drivetrain I would have happily financed it and accepted not being able to afford food

Honda really changed in the early 2000's. Before then all Civics had double wishbone front suspensions and handled pretty well for what they were. But in the 2000's they started cheaping out on the suspension, which why you see a lot of 90's Civics at autoX and such, but not many later ones. Because they were a great platform to build off of, the later ones not so much.

The bubble economy funded a lot of the greatness of the cars, and when it was over ... they had to become a little more conventional. I’m hoping that their short spurt of relative mediocrity was enough of a wake up call for them to not get as boring as Toyota. The Type-R is a great example aside from the styling, and does it still not have a knob for the radio volume?

No, but I certainly believe it. Even the regular Civics look much better in person than in pictures.
