Kinja'd!!!

I was looking at the coupons they sent me, and I noticed something. They sent me a coupon for an oil change for my M3. Then I read more, and noticed something.

but why would it exclude m3s?.... i mean.. an oil change is an oil change right?

or do m3s get fancy pants rocket oil thats much more expensive than the regular gloop they feed engines?

Send it to BMW’s HQ in Munich, customer care dept.

Methinks they won’t find it very funny either.

Excluding diesels is even more strange. Dpf equipped cars generally require low ash oil but it isnt much more expensive. Other than that its a completely standard service.

Fancy pants cars often have to be drained from multiple locations (that require the removal of multiple panels under the car rather than just one, if any) and might use different filters. Then might have a “bleed” or “run-in” procedure to make sure there oil is at the correct level. So labor time for an oil change on a fancy pants car is often quite a bit higher (maybe 1 hour versus half an hour).

Filters are often bigger and more expensive. Probably takes around 8 liters. So maybe parts are only $10-15 dollars higher with that low ash oil, but profit margins on oil changes are already razor thin, if there is a profit margin at all. So on a diesel they’d be losing, what, 20% more?

I’m unsure about cars but if they are like trucks they require a much larger quantity of oil.

When did you buy a lighthouse? And why would you take it to a dealership to change its oil?

Oil? Oh, you mean unicorn blood. It takes 9L and it’s $15 a liter.

Lighthouse?

There really isn’t a third party shop near me that I trust. I did when I was up in Roswell GA, but when I was in Texas I didn’t really know where else to take it. I was also making oil money, so even if it’s more expensive, I didn’t really care. They also usually give me a loaner, which was really nice.

Oh, how I don’t miss maintaining German cars. My last dealer oil change service on the Mazda was $27, or forty something if I wanted synthetic. And they did a bit more than what this dealer is offering you. #NeverGoingBack

They’ll likely have bulk oil that meets whatever BMW’s specs are for the normal engines, but have to use bottled oil for the M and diesel engines (remember, diesels are exotic here in the US), is my guess.

The coupon said it’s a “lighthouse oil change”

Taking your car to a dealer is fine. But I feel like if you have a lighthouse that needs an oil change they should make a house call!

Somehow I completely missed the fact that it said lighthouse. Yeah, your comment makes a lot more sense now.

Depends on the size of the engine I suppose. Every diesel I’ve serviced has been around a 2 litre engine. They mostly only took 5 to 6 litres of oil. I can see how the bigger diesels would take about 8 though.

Fair point, to be honest I didnt even know you could get a BMW diesel there until this post haha.

Cars tend to be pretty similar capacity between gas and diesel.

Displacement isn’t everything. We’ve got 2L engines taking well over 7 liters.

Nah, they meant M cars.

Oh... well then...

Wait.. it costs 80 bucks to get your oil changed? it includes filters right?

Either way, do it yourself!

It’s $100 to get the oil in the 3 series changed. I wish it was only $100 in the M3.

12/20/2017 at 15:07, STARS: 0

Damn, it seems rather overpriced.

I’m not gonna get into labour costs (Mexico City is cheaper than most American cities that way) But even here I look at the price and scoff.

I don’t have any personal money yet, but when I do i’m going to get myself a tool kit and some knowhow and do most of the petty servicing (brake fluid bleeding, oil change, spark plugs, etc) on my own.

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)
12/20/2017 at 15:18, STARS: 0

I’d rather not on the M3, it’s more I would rather pay a little more than do something stupid and turn a small job into a massive one.

I need to change the spark plugs and coils on the 3, need to see how hard that’s going to be.

I’m probably spoiled in that sense because that big ol’5.7 up in my jeep is never going to complain about who lays hands on it. Its engine bay is also the size of a small hangar, so changing components is rather easy!
