For five years GM has offered a 410 hp twin-turbo V6 in the Cadillac XTS V-Sport. Could this be the most powerful FWD-based production car in history? Could it really be a Cadillac?! My gut says, “Maybe.”

I want to remind you that this engine can be tossed into the Impala, perhaps the LaCrosse, as well as plenty of GM crossovers. A 410 hp Buick Regal Sportback/Wagon be the perfect instrument for Buick Regicide. Even though Cadillac forces you to option AWD in order to obtain that brawn, Lincoln will sneak you front wheel drive mad dogs a bone.

Many know about Lincoln’s 3.0t V6 that cranks out 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque in the Continental, MKZ, and I’m sure some upcoming CUVs. But did you know that you can get a 350 hp version of that engine inside a FWD-only MKZ? While the Civic Type-R is making Lamborghinis appear tame, the most factory power you can get to the front wheels is offered in a likely open-diff Lincoln. That vampire hunter fanfiction just became canon.

Feel encouraged to fact check me on this one my bimmer brethren. The new 5-Series is auto-only even at the magic ///M level. I also believe that the 650i Gran Coupe no longer offers a manual. That means that the M6 Gran Coupe will be the last V8 four door you can buy with a manual transmission. I think that’s true globally as well. Funny thing about the M6 GC is that it pretty much answers a majority of what people didn’t like about the last generation CTS-V.

This has been a special edition of Automotive Reminders.

1. The XTS only makes sense if you are 97, one of patBateman’s clients, or benjamin rolland.

2. No one thinks about the...what was that name again? MKD? Whatever. No one thinks about this car because no one thinks about Lincoln. When your products are forgettable, so are you. NEXT.

3. The reviews for the MT in thr M6GC say its kind of bad and the DCT is the better choice. BMW doesn’t always hit the mark with their manuals.

The XTS is what a modern Caddy should look like. TIL it’s FWD-based. Hard pass.

The Zephyr is also beautiful, but same issue. FWD means it’s really just a Fusion. As we all knew, but standard AWD would have at least been a differentiator.

The XTS just looks so damn hideous for some reason. It’s got a ridiculously stumpy front end that also happens to be taller than I am.

I want to like the XTS, but it’s too ugly and the interiors are no nicer than an impala. :(

The XTS is FWD just like the Continental which makes them a wasted opportunity to actually try to make a relevant flagship car. You can put whatever engine you want it them and I still won’t care, because they didn’t try to make the best or to compete. They just threw the opportunity away and I’m not interested in a car that was made like that.

They still make the XTS? :p

It’s just a stopgap placeholder model anyway

Isn’t the Bentley Flying Spur more powerful anyway? That would be the most powerful FWD-based car even if it’s FWD-based AWD like the XTS is (and there was also the Phaeton). And there are a few powerful FWD-based AWD Audis too.

Anyway, I like how Caddy has an XTS and an XT5

It’s funny you should say that because the MKZ consistently outsells the ATS, CTS, and CT6. In fact, about 25K MKZs have been sold in the US this year compared to only 30K of the three Cadillacs combined (12K ATS, 9.5K CTS, 9.7K CT6).

I guess what I’m saying is twice as many people think about an MKZ every year as think about an ATS.

That’s because nobody who buys an XTS or MKZ wants that much power, and nobody who wants that much power wants an MKZ or XTS.

I think only the A3, A4, Q2, Q3, and TT are fwd-biased. Everything else (especially those that share with Porsche and Bentley) favors the rear, but I could easily be off. Audi just has very unique powertrain packaging to help interior packaging. Again, I may be way off.

Wait, are you saying based or biased? There’s a difference.

Every Audi platform is FWD based(even the longitudinal MLB), save for the R8. Any AWD can be front or rear biased with a little drivetrain tweak.

only the Mulsanne is. The rest of the lineup, the Flying Spur and Continental coupes, are FWD-based even though they have a longitudinal engine. It’s a rebadged Phaeton and shares a few things with the A8 and S8. In fact, some Flying Spurs were/are made in Germany alongside the Phaeton

The new Continental GT (and the soon to be released new Flying Spur) are based on the Porsche’s MSB plataform, however. No longer FWD based

That’s not a useful comparison at all. The MK whatever can be had for $35k while the CTS is almost $20k more away. The CT6 is more than double the MSRP of the MK.

This is why a one-axis comparison such as this cannot tell us anything useful; because the S class last year ‘only’ sold 18k models compared to the MK, does that mean buyers are cross-shopping lincoln against Merc and are abandoning the german manufacturer in droves? Hardly. What’s likely happening is people decide they want a new luxury car, run up against the new luxury car pricing wall and walk away from legit luxury brands wondering what can they get exactly for what they have. This is how you get someone behind the wheel of a Taurus (or a Honda, or a Chevy) with a weird body kit, but a luxury-sounding name to it.

If it never drives only the front wheels or it doesn’t have a transaxle... It ain’t fwd based.

Can’t it drive only the front wheels though? I know the Phaeton is available without AWD in Europe.

You conveniently ignored the fact the the MKZ outsells the ATS by a factor greater than 2-to-1. That’s not a one-axis comparison. They’re at the exact same price point ($35-60K) and they’re both the entry level sedans for American brands fighting with Japanese brands (plus Jag and Alfa) for also-ran status in a segment dominated by German brands.

I’ve been looking into it for a while now and the conclusion that I’ve come to is that fwd is a strange choice for these cars that makes no sense and has no bearing on their design parameters. i.e. they are rear drive setup cars that, for reason I can’t work out, delete the rear output. All the packaging problems of RWD and all of the handling problems of FWD. Basically take this transmission...and remove the rear output.

Kinja'd!!!

it can be done, but there doesn’t seem to be a good reason to do it. Think RWD evo, only without the coolness of it being a better drift car.

If any car in the MLB (MSB), and MQB platforms has AWD, the tendency is that:

MLB favors the rears

MQB favors the fronts

Some exceptions can be found, like the Audi A6 ultra, or (I think) the RS3.
