I’m in need of a truck (hooray home ownership) and I want a truck- a big truck. I’ll likely drive it until it can’t be driven any further (I’ve owned the Stringbean since Feb 07). I’m ok with going older but it seems like we’re hitting the rust limits in doing so. To play against total brodozerisms it will be taken off road a few times a year for hunting.

That’s a NP, IF the bulletproof in the description actually means it has been mechanically bulletproofed(head studs, head gaskets, egr upgrade or deletion, etc.)

I’d get paperwork on the bullet proof of course. Did my fair share of research on the *potentially* problematic 6.0 but I’m not going to be trying to push 600hp out of it.

Other than that it does tick all the right boxes for me.

Is it weird I only like long beds on single cabs?

It’s not, long beds on anything else with single rear wheels look bad.

No, long beds belong on single cabs. Just as crew cabs belong on sedans.

I say get a hitch and cargo trailer for whatever your current vehicle is (looks like a Sebring), and skip the hassle and cost of buying and maintaining another vehicle for occasional lumber runs.

While I did play with the idea of a later model F Dually... I’m not sure I could justify the fun factor. Plus driving from VA to NY would be an expensive trip. Otherwise I’d totally DD a massive dually long bed monstrosity

How does home ownership determine the need for something like this?

My feeling is that since sort of coin could buy you quite a nice car or normal off roader and a decent trailer instead.

I have access to work vehicles when necessary. This is purely a want at this point.

The Stringbean I barely trust hauling its own weight sometimes. I really think it drives under sheer spite at this point.

Mostly lumber trips. I can’t fit much in the Sebring. Granted I have access to work vehicles at my whim but it’s more of a want. I’d rather buy a truck I’d enjoy which has dual purpose than just buying a $500 disposable Craigslist pickup special.

Eh, I still would point anyone toward a minitruck or longbed before ever considering a crew cab anything. Half ton is all you’ll likely ever use unless you’re pulling giant trailers or hauling loads of literal rocks. I have a 6' bed half ton, but don’t often drive and prefer to pull a bike trailer. The reactions are priceless.

Ultimately my garage I want a big ass truck and a tiny go cart that people would guess fits in the bed (500 Abarth or FiST) . My brotherinlaw had an S10 which was nice but I feel that niche would be filled by the go-cart car

Truth is that I am an Unreliable Expert in this case. As an Aussie, I have a deep seated meh opinion of American full size trucks. Mostly because their size does not enhance their practicality in any circumstance (except for towing) over a smaller mid size long bed pick-up, station wagon or even a van.

If you don’t tow then why Bro?

Agreed, why not use a work truck as I did today? It’s mostly because I can. And I would like a boat in the next few years so why not- if I don’t get the boat then meh, I still get to drive a semi monster truck instead

Just wait until you... I dunno... Rip up the carpet in the living room to find a floor covered in rot and mold. There goes a few months payments on the truck....

Understandable, but hard wood floors and have been here since April. I’ve been all over the house determining where and what things will cost. I’d make sure this in no way impacts my safety net of course.

But smart thinking though, much appreciated.

I mean, I’d go with about a ‘59 F-250 instead of a new brodozer but you do you. Please, for society’s sake, make sure whatever you buy has a functional exhaust system. Even stock Super Dutys are noisy and I am 140% sick and tired of hearing people drive them around as family sedans every day. All the time.

I mean, some people just want a truck. I daily drive a sub compact, but would daily a 3/4 ton truck in a heart beat. They are fun as shit, especially with a diesel.

Two inspections. Any issues (hot water heater) were resolved.

And been here since April. Structurally she’s happy. Cosmetically she needs some paint and moulding. Already ripped out one bathroom.

I have no opinion towards putting bad four letter words on the front of whatever you drive, but do take a look at the local military yard sale Facebook pages, tons of Navy guys deploying and not wanting payments on whatever diesel pickup they bought after last deployment. Usually they get let go for a reasonable price too.

If I could find a non rusty I’d gladly do so. Not saying I’ve been searching hard but I’ve yet to find a later body that wasn’t ready to fall apart under its own weight.

And exhaust wise, considering I have the loudest Sebring this side of the Mississippi I make extra effort to keep revs and noise low until I’m out of the neighborhood. I’m new here and don’t want to be *that guy*

6.0 = 6.n0 unless you have deep pockets and absolutely need 3/4 ton and diesel. And if that’s the case, save your heartache and pony up now for a 7.2 or a cummins. If you just want 3/4 ton for the size, get a gasser. Or better yet get a 1/2 ton and a nice lift. Cost of ownership over a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton diesel is easily double under perfect circumstances. Example, oil changes are easily $150, plus regular fuel filters that can be $50+. My $0.02.

thiose two are taken roughly from the same angle. we wanted to take down the wall, but didn;t want to do it until the baby was a bit older. Wehn we found out the floor was shit, we decided the wall needed to be done. I did n;t want to put down a new floor and then in a couple years take down the wall and have to patch the hole in the flooring

That’s the kind of input I’m looking for. Few things in my situation, I only drive my personal vehicle two weeks out of month and when I do it’s 4 miles to work each way and maybe a handful of extra miles if needbe. I mean, the Stringbean I’ve put less than 6k miles on since 2011. Miles will be minimal and I’m used to working on a 10 year old Chrysler so I get regular maintenance.

While I’d love a 24v Cummins the only ones I’ve seen are rust bodies and while I feel I can diagnose and repair a mechanical issue, bodywork and paint aren’t my forte.

That is absolutely the worst case for a diesel. They need to be ran frequently to keep them “cleaned out”. The 6.0 is especially notorious for this and likes to be ran hard. Diesels are way more troublesome when not ran for long enough to get up to operating temp, short drives are rough on them. Unless you just really really want a diesel, get a gasser. The amount of money you’ll save in maintenance will make up a nice mod/toy fund.

FWIW, I drive a 1/2 ton as a daily and have never ran into anything it couldn’t do for me. The only way for me to justify the jump to a 3/4 ton would be 100% towing. You can put 2500-3000lbs in the bed of a halfton, the only thing that would get close to that would be sand, wet dirt and water.

Screw it, just go for it.

It’s not going to lose value, and while it’s likely more truck than you need, better to have too much than not enough

It looks reasonably well-kept.

The 6.0's faults are easily remedied with a couple of preventative steps that are well-documented. I know some guys swear by the 7.3 International PowerStroke, but the 6.0 has its own charms, and the perceived bad reputation is one of them. Do your research.

My next-door neighbor runs a cross-country hauling company and he put well-over 400k on his 6.0L crew cab long-bed with no major incidents or lost jobs. He also had a 6.4L with over 300k on it that he replaced a couple years ago with a new one with the 6.7L, which is far and away my favorite: I proudly describe 6.7Ls as “sweethearts” and if you have a chance to get one, I highly recommend picking one up.

That said, for similar money, you can find gas 6.2L Super Duties and EcoBoost F-150s a-plenty, which should be more than capable for your needs.

It’s an absurd looking compensator that will be a huge pain in the ass to actually load with lumber, is impractical to tow with since it’s too high off the ground, looks goofy with the two tone paint and is more status symbol than vehicle. I say buy it.

Not a terrible deal. If it has actually been “bulletproofed” if not still a nice truck if it was 12k. Dont believe the hype of 6.0s are garbage. Most are from people who dont know anything about them or like Chevys.

You really dont even need to do much to one if its not proofed. Better oil cooler and gages and dont run a stupid 100hp tuner on it. Also EGR delete is best mod to a 6.0 along with the blue spring kit to keep fuel pressure good.

My daily drive is a diesel that is payload rated at 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds), has a 2,500 kg tow rating, has an 8x6 tray, does 20 mpg all day long, is 16 years old and is still a hell of a lot smaller than an F250...
