Kinja'd!!!

Found one of these tire pressure/tread depth thingies over at the Goodwill Outlet. Not exactly an expensive item, but needless to say I got it for about 95% off list...

Surprisingly, the dealer said that my tires should be good for another year, but that it’s getting close to time to replace the front brakes. The parts seem to be available at Amazon at a reasonable cost ($63 for drilled/slotted rotors and a set of pads) and is something I should be able to accomplish in an hour or two. I just wish I found this out in the fall rather than winter. Can I make it to spring with just 2mm of brake pad left? I only drive about 6,000 miles per year.

no more foot braking, just engine braking.....

I can do that. And handbrake turns.

Unlike the 525i that has a separate drum brake for the parking brake, I have no idea how the Mazda is set up.

If your driving is limited I’d get the parts to have them on hand and try to ride it out since you plan to do rotors and pads at the same time the risk of damage to items that aren’t getting changed is very low. If you get lucky you’ll catch a warm day and knock it out. Worst case you start hearing a bad noise and swap them in the cold.

Yeah, if the parts on there now are of good quality, and if you can avoid hard braking in the meantime, I bet you could probably make 2mm last that long.

It’s not something I like to recommend, but hey as long as you’re ready to swap the parts out, I would say that it’s okay to try to get a few more miles out of these. What I would do is- order the parts NOW, so that you’ll have them on hand, and maybe wait for an unseasonably warm day to throw ’em on. If it turns out that you miscalculated and hear grinding in mid-February, then you’ll just have to get out there and do what needs to be done.

Well, the parts on there now are the OEM items and have about 53K miles on them. I just placed a big order (well, big for me at least...) on Amazon today and should have thrown in the brake parts. I’m expecting a substantial check next week for having worked on a day off last week, so I’ll probably grab the brake stuff then.
