I don't really care much about the Cruze, but still sad to see yet another car losing a manual.

The cancer of non-manual cars is slowly spreading into compact cars

UNACCEPTABLE

The only way around this is to create legislation forcing auto manufacturers to offer a manual transmission at all trim levels on all vehicles except where reasonable (e.g. large trucks that do gain a lot more towing capability from having n -speed automatics.)

(that, of course, will never happen.)

They should kill the whole car. I had one as a loaner and it was likely the worst car I have ever driven.

A turbodiesel Cruze hatchback is one of my guilty wants.

The only people who will mourn the loss and the people who weren’t going to buy one anyway.

And, of course, what would be the public good from this?

Sure, there’s the arguments that people will pay attention more if they’re driving a manual... but just because you force automakers to offer the manuals doesn’t mean that you force people to buy them.

And, even if you do somehow force people to buy them... nowadays, most people won’t get better efficiency from a manual, and manuals end up having higher emissions (and rev hang, which makes them incredibly awful to drive (and makes them shred clutches if you force shifts rather than wait a second or two per shift in some cases), is about the only way automakers can fight that).
