UPDATE: In addition to below, the dealer also said that the car needs new brake pads all around. And only 1 millimeter (0.04 inches) thickness is left on the pads.

(I’m asking him if the instrument cluster shows the brake pad warning light. I’m not sure if this model has one).

Can you give me a ballpark on how much the parts and labor would cost at the dealer?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So my dad has a Q5 that recently went in for a dealer service.

This one was not free and not cheap.

Unfortunately, he lives in a small city in India, where the independent mechanics aren’t known to work on luxury cars. So he has no choice but to go to the dealership. He sent me the service quote to see if he got ripped off.

What do you guys think? Isn’t it odd to charge/account for time to check every single thing? For your reference, approx 700 Rupees is $10.

sad to say this, but i work at an Audi dealer here in OZ and i see nothing out if the ordinary in the service invoice except for the brake fluid and oil (our service department charge customer for that)

but what i fail to understand is why the dealer doesn’t use 03L198119F timing belt kit, instead of individual parts.

bonus no water pump replacement

Thanks for your insight :)

Maybe because the timing belt parts cost more if purchased independently?

$1500 USD equivalent is pretty high, but exchange rates aren’t always 1:1 for cost of product locally. A new Q5 starts around 45 lakh, or 4.5 million rupees, right? That’s roughly $65k USD equivalent, whereas a Q5 starts here at $41,500, so India pays damn near a 50% premium, so it’s not surprising to see that flow to service as well.

I have my most expensive service coming up for the S3, and it’s going to be around $900.

$1600 for an Audi service in India doesn’t really seem unfair to me.

The reason the cars are that expensive is because of the excise duty (import tax) on foreign built cars.

Car parts don’t have the same tax, even if they’re imported. So the cost doesn’t really make sense to me.

It really isn’t much more than having it serviced in the US.

Oh, I didn’t realize the cost was similar.

With only 29,000 miles on the car, it should not need any service involving gear oil. Don’t know if that’s meant to be a diff fluid flush, but it says “gearbox oil replaced” so maybe tranny fluid (although that’s not gear oil, so assuming diff). Audi says the transmission is not supposed to need fluid replaced for the life of the car, in reality it can be done ~120k miles. And I don’t know why it would need a diff fluid replacement, that doesn’t make sense to me. Make sure that nut and bolt they’re replacing is replaced with CRES hardware, installed lubricated. It’ll make future work easier.

Its 29,000 kilometers, so on 18,000 miles.

By gearbox I think they mean transmission.

Thanksfor bringing this up. The dealer is gonna have to explain this...

Yup, every trip our Q7 took to the dealer was $1000. But there were only two of those trips, as I did all the oil changes and spark plugs and coils, so not too bad.

As for the fluid change in the diff or the transmission, that sounds sketchy to me. The trans fluid is a... cough... lifetime fill, but it should be changed at least at the 100k mile mark. I prefer to drain and refill at 50k, then again at 75k, as you never get all the fluid out and for me to drop the pan involves pulling the exhaust. I figured if I keep introducing clean fluid, all will be well. And for the diffs, if there wasn’t a leak, the fluid shouldn’t need to be replaced. Doesn’t hurt, but that mileage is way early for that replacement.

Figure a $1000USD for brakes. Even if you bought the parts yourself, you’d be in it for $500-600USD. So $1000 at a dealer isn’t unreasonable.
