Kinja'd!!!

Bing has maps? Yeah, not like I went there intentionally. Unlike Google, my car is actually featured, although the proportions look a little different. I kind of like the short hood, wider, chunkier look.

Homer Simpson on the dash (don’t ask - even I don’t know...), so this pic has to be at least a couple of years old.

Gucci Mane put Bart Simpson on a chain, and you put Homer Simpson on your dash, makes sense.

I’m all for dashbuddies. My wife has had this guy on her dash for years. I bought it for her to celebrate her new car actually.

Also pictures is me showing the kid how to change a battery in an O’Reily’s parking lot.

Yeah. It’s called “street side” and it’s been trying to keep up with Google for 15 years. :)

The last time it was down our street was 2014. The Watsons still lived across the street, my Van hadn’t been painted yet, and Rich’s wife was still alive.

I picked up a Grumpy Cat over at the Goodwill Outlet. I forgot who I bought it for, but there it sits on my dash a year later.

Good to see the next generation being taught some mechanical skills. I have fond memories of changing oil and rotating tires with dad. He also taught me a few things not to do, recounting tales of helping his father when he was a kid. The one that really sticks in my mind was when he used a cheater bar to tighten up the cylinder head bolts on the old ‘50 Chevy after a head gasket replacement - *SNAP* ( oh shit. ..)

Ouch. Jonah has helped me with a few oil changes. Which reminds me the Fit needs one.

I’ll be honest - I haven’t done one myself in quite some time. Without a garage or carport it seems like too much of a hassle. I pay $27 at the dealer and they use factory parts, top off the other fluids (that long life coolant is expensive stuff) and give it a wash. I also get to check out the new models and grab a few brochures. A couple of years ago I mentioned to the salesman that sold me my car that I had never driven a Miata and he handed me a plate and a set of keys and told me to have fun.

I also feel better knowing I’m at a place that has people that know how to drive a manual transmission and is not staffed by the caliber of ‘mechanics’ that work at those quick lube places. The thought of the combination of a manual and an open lube/service pit scares the crap out of me.

Bing Maps uses HERE’s info, which used to be Nokia Maps, which was (is?) more comprehensive and complete than google maps worldwide, especially as they include indoor maps for public areas (malls, stadiums, etc.) with in-building “street view” done by people with camera-rig backpacks. Obviously being based on Europe their U.S. presence wasn’t as strong, but I believe they’re fairly even here now. I actually prefer Bing’s layout and interface, especially if I have to print or send maps/directions to someone. Plus using the maps counts as a Bing search, which gets me more Bing points, which gets me free stuff, so even more win. Google isn’t always the first, best, fastest, or biggest, but they want you to think they are.

It really doesn’t make sense to do it on your own. Either you pay 30 bucks for oil, and a filter. Or you pay 20-30 bucks and some one else for you. That’s a reeeally good deal your dealership. Works for them too because they have a record of your vehicles maintenance, and they have you coming in every 3 months to look at new cars, but man is that a good deal.
